First 10K 'Race' solo using Hal Higdon's training program

2020.10.26 05:32 hannahgrace7 First 10K 'Race' solo using Hal Higdon's training program

Race Information
Date: October 25, 2020 Distance: 10km Location: VIC, Australia (by myself- no official event) Time: 54:24 Age: 22F Strava: https://www.strava.com/activities/4238887964 Primary Goal: sub-60 (YES) Secondary Goal: sub-55 (YES!)
Training
So this 10km 'race' was the last day of Hal Higdon's Intermediate 10k training program which is 8 weeks in duration. Prior to this I had started and stopped Couch to 5K so many times I lost track, but had finally completed it back in May this year. I quickly injured myself after graduating the program from overdoing it, and then was TOO scared to overdo it that I was making very little progress after that. Enter Hal Higdon's programs, those known for magically improving both endurance and speed all while slowing down which helps to avoid injury?! I thought it was sorcery and too good to be true, but decided to give it a go anyways.
Verdict: game-changer. Completely changed the way I approach running (in combination with lurking on this subreddit a lot) and I have made it through without any injury recurrence. It was also my first time trying speed training, which was both fun and deathly at the same time! Although this report is supposed to be about the 10km at the end, I'll also drop here that my 5km time trial in week 4 of the program was 25:32.... an improvement of 1:49 on my previous best from 6 weeks prior which is crazy.
Pre-Race
Not much to say here other than I got up early as I do everyday now (see, I'm a changed woman thanks to this program!) and drank a lot more water than I usually do and skipped breakfast as I usually do for my morning runs. I was a little nervous as the previous 2 months had been building to this, but I also had never done a timed 10km so was very unsure of what my goal should be. I also was very clueless on how to pace myself and what my target splits should be- this will become obvious in the next section haha.
Race
I had run this route a few times because it is super flat compared to most of the other runs I do, was quite wary of snakes though as I had spotted one on the track earlier in the week. I knew that to hit sub-60 I should be aiming for just under 6min/km which I thought would be maintainable. Again, I had no idea how to pace for a 10km. So I'm cruising along in the 5:30-5:50 range for the first 6km at which point I thought I could probably pick up the pace and be able to maintain that until the end. A bit after 8km I checked my watch and realised I could make sub-55 if I really pushed it. My god I basically sprinted for the last km which proves I really could've gone a bit harder earlier across the whole race instead of just gunning the last little bit and killing myself trying to make the goal.
Splits
1- 5:34 2- 5:41 3- 5:40 4- 5:38 5- 5:34 6- 5:29 7- 5:19 8- 5:23 9- 5:15 10- 4:42 (lol, 1k PB too)
Post-Race
Dead. Walked around the lake (1.5km) for a cooldown and then collapsed into my car before going to Maccas to celebrate. Onto the half-marathon training program now woooh!
TL;DR
54:24 10km, Hal Higdon = good, and I need to learn how to pace properly

2020.10.23 02:08 AutoModerator General Questions Thread, October 23, 2020

A thread for new collectors to ask basic questions of the community.
Frequently Asked Questions below!
A longer version of the subreddit rules is here.
For questions specifically concerning bootlegs or vendor legitimacy, please ask in the Bootleg Megathread.
NSFW & Spoiler Guidelines
  • For Self Posts: include a bolded NSFW note next to links in that post.
  • For Links to sites/images: If the figure is NSFW, or the website has any NSFW content (including ads) be sure to tag your post NSFW and use the appropriate link flair.
Bootlegs
Any collection posts containing bootlegs, comments advocating buying bootlegs, or links to sites selling bootlegs, recasts, or unlicensed merchandise will be removed.
People often ask about the legitimacy and/or safety of a number of websites which sell large resin statues. The more commonly-asked of those deal primarily in resins from studios which do not have a license from the Japanese IP holders to produce merchandise. Therefore links to those sites are not permitted here. Another sign is if MyFigureCollection doesn't list the either the statue, its manufacturer, or the shop it's being sold on.
MyFigureCollection
My Figure Collection is like MyAnimeList... but for figures! Their database includes thousands of items which been produced during the last couple of decades, along with reviews of shops and other helpful articles. One can also list their own collection and post gallery photos.

Buying & Shipping

1. What’s the best place to buy my anime figures from?
That’s going to depend a lot on what works for you, but most people around here buy them from Amiami, Big in Japan, Hobby Search, HobbyLink Japan, or Tokyo Otaku Mode. If none of those work for you for whatever reason, there’s a list of reputable retailers in the sidebar that you can check out at any time. Be extra careful when ordering figures from websites like Amazon or ebay, as there are a lot of bootlegs on those sites. Don’t be afraid to ask in our Bootleg Megathread if you’re unsure.
2. What differences are there between the shipping options I get from most Japanese shops?
Below is a rundown of the main shipping choices you’ll get at most retailers. Keep in mind that if an order is large enough you will be forced to use one of the more expensive options, as SAL shipments have lower size and weight restrictions.
  • Unregistered SAL: Sometimes referred to as uSAL, is usually the cheapest method. It does not come with any tracking or insurance. Usually takes up 2-4 weeks for delivery.
  • Registered SAL: Sometimes referred to as rSAL, is insured for the declared value up to 6,000 yen. It comes with a tracking number and usually takes 2-4 weeks for delivery.
  • EMS: This method of shipping is much faster than either SAL options, usually arriving within a week of shipment. EMS shipments are insured for the declared value up to 2,000,000 yen.
  • Airmail
  • E-packet
  • Surface: Shops don't offer this very often. It's an actual cargo ship and slow as a result.
  • DHL: Becoming more available as an alternative to EMS on AmiAmi and other sites. Can be less expensive than EMS and of comparable speed, but may be more reliant on the specific geographical area being shipped to. Offers their own tracking.
3. I placed two+ orders for figures at different times. Will my items be shipped together, or will I have to pay shipping twice?
Most shops will ask you to pay shipping on a per-order basis, but here are some that will allow combined shipping:
  • Amiami: You can combine orders here, as long as the orders ship in the same month. It doesn’t matter if the item is new or preowned. Any preorders that are set for that month can also be combined with other orders for that month. However, be aware that if the preorder gets delayed, Amiami will remove that item from that month’s shipment and place it on a new order. To combine orders on Amiami, use the “Combine Orders” feature under “My Account”.
  • Hobby Search: Hobby Search will let you combine orders that release in the same month, but you cannot combine in stock items with preorders. If you want to combine multiple preorders, or multiple in stock items, you can do so using the “Order Recombination” feature on your account page.
  • HobbyLink Japan: At HLJ, you have the option to send paid orders to their “Private Warehouse”, where you can store them for up to 2 months. When you’re ready to ship the items, you simply select which items to ship and HLJ will combine them into one shipment for you. To use this, just select the “Private Warehouse” option as shipping when you order.
  • GSC Web Shop: Here you’ll pay a flat 2,000 yen fee per order. It doesn’t matter how many items you put in your order, or how many different months the items release in. They will charge you 2,000 yen and ship all items as they release. The exception to this rule is their Wonder Festival exclusive items. Those can only be placed in the same order as other Wonder Festival items.
If you’re unsure about whether or not a shop we haven’t listed will combine your orders, please refer to their individual FAQ’s.
4. When will I get charged for my preorder?
Most Japanese shops charge you once the item is in stock and ready for shipment. When that happens, they will send you an email asking for payment. Some shops (mostly overseas ones), will allow you to pay for the item up front though, if you’d like. A few with that option are:
  • Big in Japan (Japanese store)
  • Tokyo Otaku Mode
  • Anime Island
  • Crunchyroll
Keep in mind that overseas stores will likely get the figure a few months after Japanese ones, so pay attention to the release date stated on the website you are buying from so as to avoid that confusion.
5. Should I expect to pay customs fees when importing figures?
That depends on where you live. Here’s a quick rundown:
  • Australia: 10% GST is now assessed up front.
  • Canada: Minimum declared value for charges is around CAD$20 for regular shipments, and CAD$60 for gifts (gifting something only seems to lower the declared value by about CAD$40, not deplete it completely). When using Amiami, try their Small Air Packet option. It comes with tracking, gets there in about the same time as EMS, and is better at avoiding customs.
  • Europe: Using EMS raises your chance of getting charged for customs. SAL can still avoid customs in some countries, but generally gets checked in the UK now if the items are above the threshold. Amiami offers a shipping service called “Small Air Packet” that is really good for avoiding customs when you are only shipping one or two figures. Small Air Packet usually takes about the same amount of time as EMS, and still comes with tracking. The minimum declared value for customs charges in the Europe is pretty low- around £15 (£36 for gifts) / €20.
  • Mexico: Minimum declared value for customs fees is USD$300 for shipments by post, and USD$50 for shipments by courier.
  • United States: A shipment has to have a declared value of USD$2,000 before customs starts hitting you with fees, so you most likely won’t have to worry about them at all.
6. The figure I want is an exclusive, how do I go about ordering one outside of Japan?
You have three options for this:
A. Big in Japan is known to stock exclusive figures and ship to other countries. Usually the price is higher because they build in their proxy fees, but it’s easier than worrying about using a forwarder or proxy service. If you live in the US, Crunchyroll, Right Stuf, and Tokyo Otaku Mode also get exclusives sometimes, but out of the states the shipping can get expensive.
B. Forwarding Services: A forwarder is someone who you ship an exclusive item to so that they can forward the package on to you, usually for a flat fee + shipping. When using a forwarder you still make the purchase yourself, and enter their address into the shipping field. When the box arrives at the forwarder they will then stick your address onto the package and send it on its way.
Some popular forwarders are:
Be sure to read each sites instructions on forwarding carefully!
C. Proxy Services: With a proxy, you tell them what the item you’re looking for is and they will purchase it in your stead. This is handy for when a company doesn’t accept foreign credit cards, or you’re having trouble navigating a Japanese website.
Some popular proxies are:
Again, be sure you thoroughly read through each sites proxy instructions.
7. I see a bunch of really cheap figures that ship from China on ebay. Are those okay to buy?
Generally, no. They’re most likely bootlegs. If you want a second opinion on that, feel free to ask in the Bootleg Megathread that’s always stickied at the top of the sub.
8. What’s a bootleg, and how can I avoid buying them?
A bootleg is a counterfeit figure often made using rejected molds of the official product. They are usually priced significantly lower than the genuine article, and in order to make their profit, bootleggers use lower quality materials and have less attention to detail- resulting in a substandard figure.
The Bootleg Megathread that I mentioned in question 7 is a great tool to avoid buying any bootlegs. It has a few tips and tricks to avoiding them to begin with, and a few more on how to spot them if you’re worried you might already own one.
9. Does anyone know when figure X is going to be released? How do I know if it was delayed?
My Figure Collection (sometimes referred to as MFC) does an excellent job of staying on top of information like release dates and delays. If you’re curious about an upcoming figures release date, check there first. This information can be found directly under the “Releases” section on a figure’s entry. If you only see a month and a year in that section, it means the release date has not yet been announced by the manufacturer, and there is still a chance the figure could be delayed.
If you make an account on MFC you can also subscribe to comments, changes, and pictures via a checkbox on the right hand side of a figure’s listing. Subscribing to any of these things will allow MFC to send you an email anytime the subscription in question updates. Subscribing to “changes” is a great way to keep up with release dates and delays, among other things.
10. The figure I want is long sold out at normal retailers! What’s the best place to pick it up in the aftermarket?
A list of reputable retailers can be found under the “Shops” section of the /AnimeFigures sidebar. They all sell legitimate products, and many of them also sell figures second hand. However, the most frequently suggested second hand sites are Mandarake and Amiami- who has a preowned section that they update every night save Sundays and Japanese holidays around 1PM JST and again around 6PM JST.
AmiAmi grades their pre-owned items on a letter scale. The general consensus from buyers is that their ratings are conservative, so unless the item and/or packaging is specifically indicated as having significant flaws, pre-owned items from them are usually in at least as good a condition as their rating suggests.
Note: When you search Mandarake, you’ll get the best results by using the Japanese characters for whatever you are searching. If you don’t know them, you can find them on MFC by clicking on any of the “details” in that figure’s listing.
11. Amiami has a figure I’m interested in labeled as “For sale in Japan only”. Does this mean I can’t order it without a proxy or forwarder?
No, you can still order it. Amiami’s English site has that warning on many items, and it’s mostly meant to inform you that this product was made for a Japanese market, and as such, will have Japanese speaking/writing in it- so don’t expect any instructions to be in English. If Amiami doesn’t want foreigners buying a certain product, they won’t even list it on their English site.

Displaying Your Figures

12. What display cases do you recommend?
If you live near an Ikea try out one of these:
*If you decided on a Detolf, you might find that there is a lot of wasted space. Here are a few tutorials on raising the shelves or and adding extra ones in.
If you don’t live near an Ikea, Amazon has a few display options, though they are more expensive. Also keep an eye on your local Craigslist (or your country’s equivalent) and stores near you that are closing up.
13. What lighting do you guys recommend?
Ikea’s Dioder LED strips are often suggested. They come in white or muti-colored.
Most hardware stores carry something similar though, if you don’t live by an Ikea. Just make sure that the lights don’t get too hot!
14. What are those clear plastic boxes that I see under everyone’s figures in their collection posts, and where can I get them?
Those are called risers. Most of us use standard acrylic risers like these. Some other, easy to find things that have been suggested are:
Check your local hobby store for the first 2 options, or your local hardware store if you want to make your own.
Another common suggestion is to visit The Container Store if you have one near you. They have a lot of things to choose from that can suit a variety of needs. Be sure to check out their standard acrylic risers, their Amac boxes, and the various display cases they sell (baseball cases, mini car cases. hockey puck cases, etc).
15. Should I keep my figures sealed?
That is, of course, up to you really, but here are a few things to keep in mind when debating this question:
  • Keeping it sealed can actually damage your figure. PVC figures usually have something called plasticizer in them, and that plasticizer needs to be able to breath. If a PVC figure isn’t exposed to oxygen, after a period of time the plasticizer starts to break down and form a sticky substance on the surface of the figure. Simply opening your figures and taking them out of the box prevents this from happening. If you happen to find plasticizer goo on one of your figures, Kahotan has a handy guide for dealing with it.
  • Unlike some other figure markets, keeping an anime figure sealed won’t raise its value by a whole lot. In fact, because of the plasticizer problem mentioned above, your figure could actually be in better condition if you open it versus keeping it sealed.

Finding the Right Figure(s) for You

16. There are so many figure companies! Who makes good figures?!
Obviously this is a very subjective question, but as a general starting point, here are a few well renowned figure companies:
  • Alter
  • Max Factory
  • Good Smile Company
  • Kotobukiya (usually hit or miss for people. Use your best judgement based off of the prototype)
  • Aquamarine
  • Flare
  • Stronger
17. I really love “series X / character X”- how can I check if any figures were ever made for it?
My Figure Collection can be your best friend here. Simply do a search on the name of the series or character using the search bar located at the top right of the screen, and all associated figures pop up!
Alternatively, if you’re looking at a figure’s MFC entry, most of the text under the “Details” section can be clicked on and used to run a search.
18. How can I commission a custom figure?
None of the major figure companies (Alter, Kotobukiya, Good Smile Company, etc.) will take a commission for a single figure. This thread has a few websites in it that you can check out, or you can look into garage kits. Some kit painters would be willing to resculpt, frankenstein together, or otherwise modify kits for the right price.
If you're looking for help completing a garage kit, /brushforhire may be useful.

Keeping Up with New Announcements

19. How can I keep up with figure news (announcements, updates, etc.)?
Most people use a MFC combined with any or all of the following news sites:
To use MFC for this I’ll quote question #9.
Most companies have one or more Twitter accounts. Some examples: Good Smile Company sales, Good Smile's USA branch, Max Factory, AmiAmi Hobby News.
20. Everyone’s excited about something called Wonfes….. what the heck is that?!
WonFes (short for Wonder Festival) is a biannual figure expo where many figure producers (both large and small) show off new sculpts and updates to figures already under way. Most companies save their most exciting announcements for WonFes, so we all look forward to the expo whenever it rolls around! Winter Wonder Festival is usually held in February, while Summer Wonder Festival is usually in July. The event has also spread to Shanghai, in the late spring.
21. One or two (or 15) figures were announced at WonFes that I’m really excited about! How can I keep track of their progress once the event is over?
MFC is always really quick about getting new WonFes announcements (or any others throughout the year, for that matter) listed in their database, so we suggest using that. To find a figure from the event you can search any number of things, including the name of the character or the name of the show. You can also use the tag search to search “WonderFestival 20xx_[season]” to see all items announced at that event.

2020.10.20 13:33 djs-specs GS63VR-7RF random shutdowns

Hi!
Just last week I had both my fans replaced - out of warranty so work was not done by MSI Australia but still done by a professional - as they had both completely died. Since then, my laptop is just shutting down after 2-3 hours of playing World of Warcraft. When it happened last night I adjusted my fan speeds because it was awfully hot to the touch at the time, but tonight that wasn't the problem.
All drivers are up-to-date. I've run the CHKDSK, SFC scan and DISM repair commands through the Command window. Event Viewer has nothing of interest at the point of shutdown, but it several Event 37 errors from when I was finally able to reboot it. I'm also waiting to hear back from my repair bloke to see if he's got any ideas (left a message since its after 9pm here). Strangely, although my onscreen icon says that the battery is charging, the LED isn't lit.
Could this be related to the Power IC issue that a Google search tells me were pretty common with this model? Why would it have only started after a fan replacement?

2020.10.16 13:13 House_of_Suns /r/QOTSA Official Band of the Week 24: METALLICA

Every once in a while, a band comes along that inevitably grows to become synonymous with their genre. We’ve all seen it happen - names like Nirvana, New Order, Death, and King Crimson all invoke strong images of their respective musical styles. Hell, one of the best examples is right close to home: Josh helped define the entire genre of Stoner Rock during his time with Kyuss.
See, bands of this caliber don't come around often, but when they do, they’re some of the most influential, well connected, and creative people in music history.
Today’s band is certainly one of those elite few - and for them, Thrash Metal is the Lingua Franca. They have a history full of wicked turns, devastating heartbreak, bitter rivals, blistering riffs, and Danish knights. Okay, well, there’s only one Danish knight in this story, but having more than one sounds cooler.
Yep. If you’ve somehow never listened to them, your hearing is probably still pretty good. If you DID listen to them back in the 80s, don't worry, I’ll make sure to yell for the important parts of the write up. Ahem. Oh, sorry, I meant to say “I’LL MAKE SURE TO YELL FOR THE IMPORTANT PARTS OF THE WRITE UP”.
That’s right, you guessed it. Today’s featured artist is none other than METALLICA.
About Them
Ah yes, the 80s. Home of new wave, big hair, and MTV - A decade of strange culture, set in a post-disco world that seemed to have a disturbingly high number of synthesizers.
But the synth wasn't exactly what was on the mind of Danish immigrant Lars Ulrich. No, that would be tennis.
Or at least, it would have been, if he made it on the 7 man elite tennis team of his high school… but it wasn't meant to be. A shame, really - the world may never know the greatness of Ulrich’s tennis career. Instead, he decided to go for his fall back option: Music. He had a kit, and he could drum, but he didn’t know any metalhead guitarists. So, he did the only logical thing he could do in the situation: he put out a classified ad in a local newspaper.
Two people answered the call of metal: guitarist James Hetfield, and mildly less notably guitarist Hugh Tanner. Hetfield and the future Sir Ulrich sparked a serious musical connection, and after deciding to record a song for an upcoming compilation album, Metallica was officially brought into this world. The name was taken by Ulrich from a friend of his, who was trying to start up a metal fanzine. Apparently, his friend had narrowed it down to either “Metal Mania” or “Metallica”. Ulrich instantly swiped the Metallica name, and the rest is history.
Poor Hugh Tanner: consigned to be a musical footnote for all of eternity. I hope that he is now a middle manager at Home Depot with two kids and a dog.
Anyway, the newly christened Metal Mania Metallica went about recording their first song, Hit The Lights, and picked up a few more members while they were at it. The bassist from Hetfield’s band, Ron McGovney, officially joined Metallica after they started playing live. One “David S. Mustaine” responded to another Ulrich Certified™ Classified ad, this time for the position of Lead Guitarist. Mustaine barely even had to audition. Ulrich and Hetfield just let him in when they saw how expensive his equipment looked.
You think I am exaggerating, but I assure you I am not.
Success came early for these boys, and they were soon generating a fair bit of buzz in the underground metal scene. They managed to record a few rough demos in this time, including many songs that would later be re-recorded on their first album. It seemed they were finding their feet, and the future was bright.
Well, OK, that was not true. I mean, not true at all. At this point, they were a young, dinky bar band with some good amps and rampant internal issues.
Yep, Metallica had already run into some significant problems. McGovney contributed jack all to the songwriting process. Mustaine was a massive drunk. Hetfield’s early voice on the demo recordings is super high pitched. This one isn't necessarily a problem, I just think that it’s kind of hilarious. Either way, the band had to get over these speed bumps.
First, McGovney was given the boot when Hetfield and Ulrich ran into someone better: Cliff Burton. After seeing Burton play live, Hetfield and Ulrich knew they wanted him in the band - they were just that blown away by his performance. Although he wasn't interested at first, Burton eventually joined on the condition that the whole band shuffle on up to San Francisco.
Ah yes, San Francisco. That Mecca of metal.
Mustaine was a whole other problem. Evidently, he was a fucking BEAST on the guitar, even back then. Unfortunately, the only thing he shredded more than his fretboard was his liver. It got to the point where he almost always showed up to practice completely plastered, and the band just got fed up. So, when they drove to Rochester to record their debut album, Mustaine was unceremoniously kicked out. Yep. After going all the way across the country, Mustaine was dumped at a bus terminal with nothing but his gear and a one way ticket to LA.
Sounds like they were asking for a bitter rival at this point. I mean, come on, they just made him into a Disney villain...if Disney featured 19 year old drunks with a penchant for thrash metal. Truth was, this was a man who could not let go of this conflict.
I’m looking real hard at you, Hans Westergaard.. Wait, was that movie set in Denmark?
Mustaine was replaced, in that afternoon, by Exodus guitarist Kirk Hammett. Talk about a kick in the nads. Mustaine went on to found the rival band Megadeth, and has gone on record multiple times regarding his hatred for Hammett, calling him a ripoff that stole every lead he had written on those early demo tapes. He was even angry enough to include Mechanix on the first Megadeth album, which is basically just The Four Horseman but F A S T E R. That band is a story for another day though, so let’s get this write up back on track.
With their line up set, the boys went about recording their first album: Metal Up Your Ass. Yep. We all know that famous Metallica album, the graciously and beautifully named Metal Up Your Ass.
If you are into that sort of thing, you may be in the wrong subreddit. Or not. I’m really not here to judge.
Okay, the label didn't quite like that name (I wonder why?) so they ended up changing it to Kill Em All. Nice and PG now, as you can see. ‘Cause we all know that threatening genocide is much more palatable than anal sex.
This record was not necessarily a financial success, but damn did it earn them some respect. The tempos were high and the riffs were loud. Hetfield’s aggressive vocal style came into fruition, Mustaine’s Hammett’s solos gave people permanent neck damage, and Burton’s bass probably caused a few earthquakes somewhere overseas (seriously, Anesthesia is a goddamn masterpiece). Oh, Ulrich was also there.
People loved their sound, and through word of mouth, they garnered an ever more dedicated underground following. The band had hit the ground running, and weren’t about to stop.
After a tour, they were back in the studio for another round of recording (this time in Denmark - the true home of metal. Fuck you, San Franciso.) And in 1984, Ride the Lightning was released.
Interestingly, a French label accidentally printed the album cover in Green, and this is now considered a precious and highly desirable collectible. But apparently when I paint my skin green for a date I'm “weird” and “scaring the other bar patrons”. What a double standard.
Ride the Lightning was even more successful than their first album. It saw a further progression in their sound, featuring acoustic intros and lyrical themes other than “METALL FUCK YEAHHH”. Okay, they still included that theme, but there’s also Cthulhu, the Bible, and Ernest Hemingway on this record. Look, man, there’s nothing more metal than classic literature.
This album earned them a record deal with Elektra, and led to some serious financial success. Soon, they were playing for crowds numbering in the tens of thousands. Metal was spreading, and Metallica was breaking into the big time.
But there was one album that really pushed them over the edge. One record that many still see as their true magnum opus. An album that has drawn countless teenagers into the world of long hair and distorted guitars.
Master of Puppets released in 1986, and has since reached a certified triple platinum in total sales. It needs no introduction. Each and every track is a work of art. If you somehow haven't heard it, what rock have you been living under, man? Please, go fire it up right now. Also, if the volume isn't high enough that your neighbors can hear it, you’re doing it wrong.
Master of Puppets saw even more growth for the band. It earned them a place on tour with Ozzy Osbourne, which exposed them to an entirely different genre of metalheads. Sales were up, and shows were well attended: everything seemed to be going right.
Disaster has a funny penchant for following success. In September of 1986, the band was in Sweden for the European leg of their tour. The bus’ beds were trash, and knowing this, Hammett and Burton decided to draw playing cards for the first pick. Burton won, and claimed Hammett’s bunk - Hammett responded by sleeping up front instead. This random chance event would come to haunt Hammett for the rest of his life.
In the early hours of the morning, the bus skidded off the road, rolling several times before coming to a screeching halt. Burton, who was sleeping at the time, was thrown out of a window directly into the path of the rolling bus. He was pinned, and died shortly thereafter.
Burton’s death left Metallica heartbroken and doubtful about the future, and is a fucking terrible loss not only for the band, but for music as a whole. Metallica decided that Burton would want them to carry on, and after a wave of auditions, Jason Newstead (of Flotsam and Jetsam) was added to the band.
So, after a tumultuous two years, Metallica went back to the studio. What came out the other side was a different band - one with bass lines so good, you can’t even hear ‘em.
That’s right. Although the songs were still amazing, the production on ...And Justice For All sucked all kinds of ass. And not the good ass, like Metal Up Your Ass type of ass. This was the bad kind of ass. And the root of the problem? One very bitter Lars Ulrich, who was behaving like an ass (The bad kind of ass). Evidently, he was angry at Jason Newstead for not being Cliff Burton, and deliberately pushed the producer to make all the bass parts completely inaudible. Man, what a prick.
But even without bass, this album still slaps. Blackened’s riff has been in my head for the last 10 years, send help. Dyers Eve features one of the thrashiest guitar lines in the band’s discography, and actually has some decently impressive drumming on it. Finally, I'm pretty sure that One inspired an entire generation of guitarists to learn how to finger tap.
Actually, it’s such an iconic, amazing song that I’m not going to wait for the link section to make you listen to it. Here, take this, and put it on right now.
Shit, wrong One. Here’s the real one.
God dammit, not again. Okay, third time’s the charm.
Fuck it. Close enough.
So after numerous tours, strings of massive sold out venues, and widespread attention, Metallica was on top of the world. When it came to their next album, what do you think they did? Did they keep with what was working, honouring their Thrash Metal roots? Did they decide to step into Death or Power Metal for an album? Maybe throw it all away in favour of a hip-hop career?
Nope. After 4 albums of Thrash, Metallica opted for hard rock. That’s right, it's time to talk about the black album - a record that, and I quote, “was remixed three times, cost a million dollars, and ended three marriages”. Oh yeah. You know it's gotta be good when the divorce lawyer shows up.
This record was a beast. Their other albums had made them popular, but the black album turned Metallica into the best selling Metal band in history. Their new sound was more accessible compared to their earlier work, and the album’s production gave them this monumentous, huge tone that people just couldn't get enough of. Songs like Wherever I May Roam, Sad but True, and especially Enter Sandman got boat loads of radio play. The doors were opened to a whole new audience, and sales hit an all time high. Metallica was king.
They really could have put a neat bow on their discography right there, but they decided to record more albums and we all have to live with the consequences. Let's get through them quickly, just to ease the pain.
Load (1996) was decidedly “meh”. It further moved them away from their Thrash roots, and things got kinda weird. I’m talking “the album cover is a mixture of cow blood and some guy’s semen” levels of weird. Yeah, I wish I was making that up.
Reload picked up where Load left off, this time with PISS and blood. The music was notably southern and bluesy, and even further off from pure Thrash. It wasn't necessarily all bad though. Notably, it has the song Fuel on it, and I mean, there’s nothing better than Hetfield screaming “GIMME FUUL GIMME FAHH GIMME DABBADIDESAH” directly into your ear.
Then they released an album full of covers, got into a huge legal battle with Napster, and lost another bassist. On top of Newstead jumping ship (I guess being systematically produced out of an album leaves a bad taste in one’s mouth?), Hetfield also checked into rehab for a few years to deal with his alcoholism. Look man, a lot of shit happened. Honestly, you should just watch the documentary “Some Kind of Monster” (which they also managed to record amidst all this drama).
Then they recorded the album St. Anger. It sucked.
Let’s move on. Shortly after the-record-that-should-not-be, Metallica managed to find a permanent replacement for Newstead - Suicidal Tendencies bassist Robert Trujillo. Between performances, I’m pretty sure he enjoys benching cargo trucks and drinking roof nails. Seriously, this guy looks like he can break you in half without even trying. He remains their bassist to this day, and I think his bass has gotten progressively lower to the ground with every performance.
Okay, only a few more albums left to go. It's time for a (Ride the) Lighting round. Death Magnetic (2008) was meh. Lulu (2011) was a strange-ass collaboration with Lou Reed, and also sucked. Beyond Magnetic (2011) was an EP that was released, I guess. Metallica: Through the Never (2013) was put out as a live album that soundtracked a wacky concert movie by the same name. Finally, Hardwired... to Self-Destruct (2016) was a halfway decent record. Honestly, I think it may have been released just as an excuse to tour.
Oh and fun fact about Hardwired.. - Hammett was barely involved in its writing process. As it turns out, he forgot his phone at an airport and lost the hundreds of riffs he had stored on it. Who knows - some air terminal janitor may be jamming out to a secret Metallica album right now, laughing at the rest of us. Damn you, oh lucky janitor, damn you to airport hell.
And that's about it for the band, besides Ulrich somehow earning knighthood in Denmark. These guys have got one hell of a history, and one hell of a backlog of albums. They are an interesting case study in how a band changes from record to record, and how drama and infighting can utterly destroy a group. Above all, they are icons: and even now, I’m sure that somewhere, some 16 year old is struggling his way through the intro solo of One, breaking in the strings of his first electric guitar.
If you haven’t heard of them, who are you and how did you get here? Actually, that doesn't matter, you should listen to them anyway. Now if you don't mind me, I’ve got a date in an hour, and a LOT of green paint to put on. Metallica forever.
Links to QOTSA
Metallica actually played a huge role in giving Josh his first proper stadium rock concert experience. To explain this, we need to go back, way way back, to the far off year of 1993.
After the release of their second album, Kyuss had caused quite the uproar in the world of music. This is understandable, since Blues for the Red Sun is a fucking amazing record. Meanwhile, Metallica was in the midst of a dilemma - they had not yet found a band to open for them at nine of their upcoming shows in Australia.
So the inevitable happened, and Metallica asked Kyuss to open at all nine of these concerts. Apparently, the members of Metallica loved Kyuss’ style and were more than happy to give them this opportunity. Garcia, Bjork, Reeder, and Homme proceeded to kill it night after night, and blew the minds of those Thrash Metal audiences. Many would note that Kyuss was even heavier than Metallica, and I'm sure that these nights converted many to the ways of Stoner Rock.
The shows proved incredibly important in the coming years. They propelled Kyuss further into the public eye, thereby heavily influencing the path of Homme’s musical career. They also gave him some serious concert experience, which he inevitably carried forward into QotSA.
Besides this major connection, there are a few other things worth mentioning. Hammett and Trujillo joined Joey Castillo in a group for a few one-off classic rock covers back in 2019. Also, Josh has kind of ripped on Metallica, stating that they stole a lot of stuff from Kyuss when they wrote Load and Reload. Whether or not they “stole” anything is debatable, but I think it's kind of sick that even Metallica could be influenced by that low down desert groove.
Their Music
Hit The Lights -- this time without the super high pitched vocals.
(Anesthesia) - Pulling Teeth -- check the seismograph, this one’s moving some earth.
Mechanix The Four Horsemen -- “original riff pls do not steal and rerecord onto a the album of a rival band”
For Whom the Bell Tolls -- terrifying war stories, any one?
Fade to Black -- I HAVE LOST THE WILL TO LIIIIVEEEE
Creeping Death -- nothing more metal than passover.
Orion -- rock on Cliff, rock on.
Battery -- Beautiful intro, and then the riff slaps you in the face before doing donuts on your front lawn at 3 am. You then join in, cause the riff is just that fucking good.
Master of Puppets -- no description necessary. Listen to it, now.
Blackened -- Bass solo starts at 6:40.
Dyers Eve -- Man, it’s wild that they went from this to Enter Sandman in under 3 years.
One -- The real one this time.
Wherever I may Roam -- Rover, wanderer, nomad, vagabond, drifter, freebooter, itinerant, migratory hobo, etc.
Fuel -- please bestow unto me these three things: firstly, I would like some form of gasoline or diesel, next I request the rapid oxidation of a material in the exothermic chemical process of combustion, and finally I ask for anything else that I happen to crave. Ahem. OOOOOOOooHH, YE-HEA.
Spit Out The Bone -- probably one of the most Thrashy songs Metallica has released since the 80s.
Show Them Some Love
/Metallica - they’re beating us at 57,690 members boys, we’ve got work to do if we want to pass them. I say we start by getting them into Kyuss, and then pushing them into the QotSA self titled record - that should get their inevitable Josh Homme addiction going.

2020.10.15 14:34 iamgodandashamed I drink a lot

I DRINK A LOT

I was born in 1968

At first it may be because of a failed relationship with a neighbour because she hooked
up with my brother. On that what sort of person does that, seriously. I wasn't ready for
that. I have decided not to swear on here. I will also not give away names or businesses.
They could possibly work it out but I won't name anyone. I just want to tell my story.
Later it became more of I just want to forget. And sleep. I can't kill myself or hurt
myself.

Some more reasons are that I was bullied throughout my life. My stepfather abused me. My
real dad was an alcoholic. My mother was controlling from my 20's. When I met the
neighbour I was 21. She kicked both my brother and I out if we didn't stop seeing her.
But then again the neighbour was a waste of space. Around the late 2000's my mum actually
wrote me a letter to say stop seeing a mutual friend.

Some local kids decided to throw condoms with water inside them because I was friends
with a gay guy. I knew he was gay. So what. But local kids thought it was wrong. They
were homophobic. I could really get them into trouble now with that. But why bother. I
really just drink so I will die soon hopefully. I have lost all hope for humanity.
They threw them at my car.

Anyways, after my abuse I still didn't work out my sexuality until probably 1994/1995.
I am not sure.

My father was an alcoholic and lost the family business early on in my life. My mum and
dad separated when I was 5. I remember little about my early childhood. Mainly things at
school. One home incident really stuck out early. I have a scar above my eye because a
steel ladder hit it. 5 stitches.

I am pretty sure my dad use to abuse my mum and gave us all the belt at one point. My
oldest brother acted out a lot and left when he was 16 I think.

After my parents separated I would visit my mum on weekends and holidays and see my
stepfather and his kids. Then in 1975 my mum and stepfather moved to another state.
Starting in December, 1978, I visited my mum and stepfather in the holidays staying
about 5 weeks. This happened in 1978,79,80,81. In June 1982 my dad had the accident and
I stayed with my mum for about 3 months.

Another incident was a German Shepard ( named that way at the time) attacked me when I
was walking home and I got some bad scratches and a lifetime fear of dogs. Found out
later the dog attacked someone else and was shot dead.

I am one of three brothers. The oldest is now dead from a heart attack but was an
alcoholic. The second oldest now has cancer but was born with brain damage. He was the
brother that the neighbour dumped me for him. ( again yea who does that?) Me. I am an
alcoholic and had been abused, bullied, cheated on, lost a son to a girl who cheated on
me. Yea so life is great hey.

I worked out my sexuality in 1994? Maybe. Well in 2000 I moved to a big city and started
driving a taxi. I left a winery because the lead hand wouldn't stop pushing his ideas on
me. One of my last conversations to him was that I would kill him and bury him. I think
I got the point across.

In 1978, I had a weird conversation with my stepsister. She asked me how I masturbated.
I didn't at that point. 2 years later after my mum and stepfather met another couple,
some of my abuse started. Yes it was sexual. I can't say I was forced. I wanted to do
it. I know that doesn't make it right. Its just what happened. With one of the sons of
the other family some things happened. We visited a nudist camp and nudist beach. The
other family had 6 children. They were a blended family. The oldest was about 16. The 2
stepsisters were a year older then me. The 2 stepbrother's were my age. There was a
younger girl. About 3 years younger. In 1982 I had extra relations with the other
brother and both stepsisters. We were all about 14 and 15 when this happened.

Actually in 1982, my father had a bad accident. He was going to buy a bottle of sherry
from a pub. Apparently he said he did a u-turn and hit a tree.
Actually he hit the tree at speed. He claimed someone ran him off the road.
He hit that tree with such force that the car, a ht panel van, had a rounded dent in the
front that it was amazing he was still alive. He had broken ribs, broken legs, and
troubles with eating and other things. He couldn't walk properly afterwards. When I saw
him in hospital I fainted. It was horrific. So I went to live with my mom. When he
recovered I went back to him. He continued to drink. We moved from one city to a town
then to a beach town. At this point I was experimenting with wearing women's clothes.
And in the beach town I continued with meeting men.

In 1984 my father died. He couldn't eat properly. And still drank. I started stealing
things from 1982 and ended up spending 3 months in a detention centre in 1983 ( I think)
then had probation until age 18. When I left the centre I again run away but my children
services officer found me. Anyways. I stopped acting out and lost my father.

In 1981, I was in a school in grade 8 in a high school that I knew nearly everyone in
the school. 1982 year 9 I did it then had to continue year 9 in another school where I
was bullied. 1983 I had to repeat year 9 but when I was sentenced to 3 months prison
after stealing bicycles, a boat and tried to steel a car and succeeded in stealing my
dad's car and drove to a big city, my dad took me to the police. In the police interviews
they first tried to pin a lot of stuff on me and i played along until i got sick of the
righteous cop who thought i was some sort of crime wave. I wanted to leave school. One
of the best things I made friends with the strongest guy in that place. Funny thing I
remember when a yacht won for a small country. And a song about still standing. I made
a coffee table too.

After my father's funeral me and the second oldest brother returned to my mother's and
stepfather's place. A caravan with all of my toys and coffee table, my brother's models
and telescopes and clothes was stolen as well as school photos. The caravan was recovered
but nothing else. Who steals photos and toys?

2 incidents that happened about 8 years apart in 2 different states really affected me
badly. The day after my birthday in 1986 I picked up my car from the pub, saw some
friends, then drove home when I got to my turn I saw some police cars and an ambulance
and a car that looked like it was sideswiped. Turns out the driver who was killed was a
local popular girl and was pushing her car after running out of fuel. The drunk driver
lost his licence and not much else. I reckon he should have been locked up for murder.
Another 8 years or so in another state a local kid hopped into his classic car and headed
into town but a big 4wd driven by another drunk driver was headed towards him and
collided and killed him. The drunk driver got a slap on the hand. He, too should have
been put in jail for murder. 2 more wastes of spaces.

I want to tell my story to everyone for free. I don't want money. I am a unemployed carer
for my brother who has cancer. If anyone wants to donate, donate to a worthy cause of
your choosing.

In year 7 the teacher's kid was in his class and because of that I got the cane for
several times. Of course I would like to find that kid now and whip him but he is another
waste of space.

The principal was also a waste of space and at one time kept us all on the parade ground
where someone fainted from the heat. À girl at the school who I liked lied that she
liked me but was joking. I did see her again in 1989 maybe. The third bf of the
neighbour punched me because I started stalking her, oh yes I did stalk her but again
who the hell hooks up with my brother after dumping me.

That couple later was arrested for drugs and later left the area. A local drunk who
abused me for the following and stalking ended up getting run over and died. I thought
at least one waste of space is now dead.

A stupid idiot died. Good.

There were some great experiences from my childhood. Like a cat that was blind that I
called pinky. She was a white albino cat. She was probably blind.

She was the greatest pet I ever had. She had a litter in my dad's doctor's case. She
once followed me all the way to the local shop ( about 4 kms) and back but I had to
carry her the last few hundred yards. But as all great things it ended with tragedy. I
came home from school and couldn't find her. My dad said he found her after being
attacked by dogs, her back broken he had to put her out of her misery. I have never
since had a pet like her. I don't know what happened to the  dogs, but another
reason I hate dogs.

Put it this way. If I had a gun and a dog walked up to me I would pull the trigger.

On my stepfather. Yes he abused me and another kid. His reputation could be ruined by
this. His paintings are hanging in a council office and a park is named after him. If
anyone thinks they should be changed then I will get that done. If not I will leave it.
My stepfather passed away in 2005 from a heart attack because he still smoked.

My mother was controlling. I think in the early 2000's I told my mum and stepfather
about a girl I was interested in. That didn't work out. I never told them any other
relationship again. I think I picked younger girls because I missed out on girls from
21 to 33. I met many girls from 2001 to 2019. Most were younger. Only one was older.
But they were always of legal age. I could never be an abuser. And I couldn't be with
a married woman either.

Some of the first girls were Aussie, but I soon moved to Asian ladies, even marrying a
Vietnamese girl so she could stay in Australia. It failed though cause she was too busy
making money as a hooker. She claimed she was a stripper but she would bring guys back
to the house. In 2010 I changed to mostly African girls. My last lady friend was
Hispanic.

A "gf" in 2017 to 2018 who I had a baby with who was still born because of her not
telling me that her water had broken. She also cheated on me. I don't know when it
started. Soon after leaving a job where I was bullied and treated like rubbish a guy
came to the house and she hoped I wasn't home. After some distinctive noises I did
leave. She wanted to have a second baby but after finding out she cheated I didn't want
to have another kid with her. Soon after we left the house and I went back to living in
my car.

Living in my car. Pretty sure I did this from December 2009. Anytime I had work in big
city. At one point I joined a gym so I could shower. Other times I went to swimming
pools. Later I found a truck service station that wouldn't mind who used the showers
as long as you bought something.  Actually some great meals and people at the
place. I couldn't really afford it but at least I wasn't paying rent.

Yes I am an alcoholic. I won't stop. I want to die. I am ashamed. If anyone wants to
stop me guess you will have to lock me up. In the world we have a megalomaniac who
wants to rule the world. We have minorities who are continually dying in custody. If
even one person doesn't do anything then nothing changes.

Met a lovely person in 2011. Things ended in 2012 when I left a Job to be with her. Job
later folded. Owners were another waste of space. But I loved this person. I know it
wouldn't have worked though. I was too old. If I had met her in, oh that wouldn't work
out. Let's just say if I was 20 years younger it would have been better.

I can only think of one woman who was my perfect match but that didn't work out. Or if
we were born in different times.

Pretty sure that I will never find true love or another job.

Thanks to the federal government for forgetting unemployed people over 35. Thanks
for one state government for blaming another government for closing state boarders
then recording more infections. And thanks to a waste of space.

Pandemic. Look at the numbers. One country has the most. This country never took
proper precautions. Their leader is another waste of space.

My new catch phrase. Another waste of space.

Jobs I left. 2 times at the winery. Firstly one couple couldn't work fast enough. I
know I am slow but this couple was retarded. Second time was because of that leading
hand. Driving taxis I just moved depots when I moved houses. In 2002 I worked for a guy
to deliver junk mail. He was another waste of space. I lived with him and his gf ( being
a friend of mine) I woke up one night to his swearing, actually turning out to be a
reminder to my dad.

I worked for a depot in 2008-09, because the mechanic thought it was funny to trap me
in the window. Guess what another waste of space.

I worked for a depot where the owner was a waste of space.

A dealership I worked for where I was bullied and that. Well everyone there was a waste
of space.

Oh yea bonus material. A girl and a cop tried to frame me for hitting her car. She
actually reversed into me. Her and parents ran a shop with adult videos and drugs. The
cop was involved. Anyways later on I heard he tried to pick up another girl and got his
brains blown out.

In that place before we moved I could get anything I wanted. For instance I could buy
a gun.

So should I keep drinking.

I also ran a few businesses of my own. And even one on an app. Again probably making
less then $10 an hour. More wastes of spaces.

Talk about slave labour. Even in this country they still want people to pick fruit
and be paid for weight. Again another waste of space.

From October 2018, after I left that house I would work up to 8 days then drive up to
the little country town and buy and cook dinner for my brother. Sometime in September
2019 I noticed my brother had a lump on his neck. He said he had it for awhile. I got
him to see a doctor and when he did she referred him to a ct scan. Then he referred to
an oncologist. He was diagnosed with incurable cancer.

Mum passed away in 2013 from cancer.

I moved all my stuff up to the house to care for my brother at the end of September.
Cook and shop and stuff. Drive him to his appointments. We have visited another town
which is 100kms away 26 times. My brother has had all of his treatments and all is good
for now.

I will no longer risk my brothers life now. I won't be meeting anyone for years.

Now to this year. I have almost paid off a big debt. Started in 1994/1995 with a
bankcard. Up to $13000. Paid it off in 2012 after my ute got written off. But then
made it again after the move to be with that girl. This year I also got the remainder
of me super. ( a stupid idea. Why not have your money now). Anyways bought some gadgets,
paid off debt and may have a road bike end of this year.

My body isn't too good. I am overweight and have high blood pressure. I had also
started smoking when I was 15 then gave up when I was 23. So at a later date I may
develop cancer as well. Do I want to know. Part of me does and my doctor has suggested
I find out via an x-ray. Part of me does not. We all die. I have now reached out to
see a psychologist to talk to someone about my mental health and life. But I also want
to tell my life story to my family, some day.

I stopped drinking the other day will now take it one day at a time. I know I have to
be here for my brother. After that I don't know.

Aboriginal Archives: Two Depraved Deaths on Mitchell Hwy
This is the second in a collection of true crime events, by themselves uniquely brutal and investigations themselves unquestionable, yet quietly set aside by the local public servants - be they police, justice workers, and others.
Note: This story contains the names and descriptions of deceased Aboriginal persons.

Source [N1}
Jacinta "Cindy" Rose Smith And Mona Lisa Smith
Mona Smith, 16, and Cindy Smith, 15, were two young cousins growing up in what was then Bourke’s Aboriginal reserve. It has subsequently been named Alice Edwards Village. Not only cousins the girls were also best friends, described as being "attached at the hip". As teens do they hung around town and the local levee. Friendly and outgoing they were known and liked in their local community. That fateful day they spent the time paling around.
The Disfunction of Bourke, NSW
Bourke has time and again been described as an extremely dangerous and violent place, culminating with a 2013 report showing Burke topped the state in six out of eight major crime categories. At the time of writing, over 30% of the town is Aboriginal.
Note: one of those is ‘driving offences’ and the other is ‘breaching bail conditions’. With community reforms made by 2017, there was a 72% reduction in the number of people under 25 arrested for driving without a licence.
Figures from Maranguka show that in Bourke between 2015 and 2017 rates fell by:

  • 18% for major offences
  • 34% for non-domestic violence related assaults
  • 39% for domestic violence-related assaults
  • 39% for drug offences
  • 35% for driving offences
Statistically, there has been generational chronic unemployment in Aboriginal communities, compounded by access to education and health services.
This is the Bourke Mona and Cindy would have known.
At the time of the events, this case was not widely covered. Additionally, much of the primary documentation is simply not available. I have pulled the more detailed coverage from a book and the rest from a selection of news articles.
Their Death
Date/Time
6 December 1987 / the early hours of the morning
On the evening of 5 December, 1987 summer was in full swing, and on that balmy night, a terrible crime occurred. Bourke is a town on the edge of the bush, considered the town straddling the agriculture regions and the great Outback. Two teens, Mona and Cindy, climbed into a ute [N2] at 2130 driven by a 40-year-old white man named Alexander Ian Grant. It is unknown if Mona and Cindy knew the driver, or if they were aware of how intoxicated he was. That day he had consumed an estimated 30 standard drinks - the standard size in Australia is 10 fluid oz.
Mitchell Highway
The long, sealed road running from Brouke to Enngonia is officially B71, going by the name Mitchell Highway. Just beyond Enngonia is the border between NSW and Queensland. The events occurred along part of the 98.3 km ribbon of tarmac - the connection from North Bourke to Enngonia. This section, like most of the run, is a dual-carriageway. From above it seems to cut through a red pitted landscape. Around it is bone-dry land with scrub some seasons. It is a very lonely place. Even now there is little to be found along this lone ribbon connecting NSW to Queensland.
The Accused
Alexander Ian Grant, then 40, was an excavator driver. After the events, by October 1989, he had moved to Sydney - the suburb Sans Souci. Much of his whereabouts afterwards were unknown to the government or the general public. He died 15 December 2018, without spending a day in jail.

Cindy (l) and Mona (r)
The Physical Evidence and the Events
Just after midnight on 6 December 1987 a ute rolled off B71 coming to a rest upright but with its top crushed in. All three occupants were ejected from the vehicle. The force as she passed through the front windscreen scalped Mona and tore off one of her ears. A deep, tearing gash ran from her left eye to the base of her skull. She lay in a ditch and bled out there. It is estimated she died relatively quickly. Cindy was not so lucky. Instead, Cindy was profoundly hurt - she had massive internal injuries and a crushed pelvis. With all the pain she would have found it hard to breathe or speak. It would have been impossible for her to move her legs or roll over. She died slowly while looking upwards.
Grant was uninjured and deeply drunk. In fact, he was still drunk when others stumbled upon the scene hours later.
The Discovery
Two utes discovered the scene at in the pre-dawn light. It was not a typical crash - instead, it was a bizarre tableau. The vehicles had just begun their journey at 0400, final destination Quilpie, Queensland – 660km away. Yet they had only made thirty minutes from North Bourke. The motley crew was made up of local farmers Tex Johnson and his wife Adele with driver Michael Baty. The second vehicle was driven by Shane Baty, brother to Michael, with passengers Shane Degenhart and James Kennedy. When he came upon the crash M. Baty manoeuvred his vehicle to point the wrong way up traffic to illuminate the scene.
It was too shocking to comprehend fully, but T. Johnson was concerned enough to approach alone. Coming upon the first body he found it to be facedown, cold and purple with no signs of life. T. Johnson preformed a manual examination to be sure. While he stood over the body S. Baty came to the scene and parked behind the first vehicle. T. Johnson directed S. Baty to circumvent and use the ute’s lights to help illuminate the area. The flat area of drainage was awash with artificial light. From the first ute A. Johnson announced she could see more bodies. As T. Johnson approached he thought the two he saw were dead as well. They were arranged on a neatly spread tarpaulin[N3]. Later he would describe
“a body of a young Aboriginal girl laying on her back, she had her pants down around her ankles, but her legs were together. There was a fellow lying beside the dead girl on her right side, resting on his left side cuddling up to her with his right arm over her chest near about the centre.”
The man had his arm across the 15-year old's breasts. Cindy's body was face up and cool to the touch. Her shirt had been pulled up around her neck, trackies and underwear tugged to her ankles.
While T. Johnson stood over the two bodies S. Baty approached. He too checked the body nearest the road first. He described Mona as a “person was laying [sic] face down and appeared to be dead. The person was dark skinned and appeared to be Aboriginal to me.” S. Baty got to the two bodies and immediately performed a manual examination for life on the girl, attempting to find a pulse from the neck and the armpit, but there was none. Even though untrained, both men assumed all three were dead at the time. S. Baty told T. Johnson as much. As S. Baty reached for the third body – assuming it to be like the others – they were shocked when it began to move under its own power. Caught off-guard S. Baty inserted his right pinkie finger into the man’s mouth to check for obstruction. He appeared, quoting S. Baty, “very dopey in appearance.” This was Grant.
According to S. Baty they had the following exchange:
S. Baty: You’ve got two dead gins here, mate.
Grant: No, no. They’re all right. They’ve just had too much to drink.S. Baty: Are you all right? How’s your head and neck.
Note: "gin" is a derogatory term for Aboriginal women, and white men who went with them were called "gin jockeys".
After the exchange Grant did not respond. Instead, he lay back down next to the dead girl and slung an arm over her exposed chest. S. Baty and T. Johnson were baffled. They decided that S. Baty would continue on to Enngonia while T. Johnson his crew and his ute would wait. Later, T. Johnson would say he wanted to keep the birds off the bodies. T. Johnson walked around the crash site a final time. He noticed at the foot of the tarpan a half-full bottle of beer. Grant roused again.
Grant: We’re all right, we’re all right.
T. Johnson: That girl you’re with is dead.
Grant: We’re only resting.
T. Johnson: That bloke up the bank is dead too.
Grant: It’s not a bloke. She’s a girl. She’s only resting too.
What T. Johnson said in response is unknown – but Grant became aggressive. T. Johnson later said:
The bloke started getting very abusive and said something to me like ‘Fuck off. We’re right.’ We then left to Enngonia because since he was alive I figured the crows wouldn’t get him. The fellow didn’t get up at any stage and he was still laying down when I left. The guy was fully dressed when I saw him although I didn’t ask him name I did say ‘Where are you from, mate?’ and he said ‘Bourke’.
While T. Johnson was pulling away from the scene, S. Baty had made it to Enngonia.
Just after 0500 Constable Harper was pulled into the duty from days of sick leave - which may have affected the ability to do his job. The other, Constable McKenzie, was dragged from sleep. The officers who responded made a few notable mistakes. This was not the sort of crime they would have been familiar with. When they arrived at the crash Grant had staged himself upright by the destroyed ute. The conversation went as follows, with McKenzie asking Grant if he had been involved:
Grant: Yeah, mate.
McKenzie: Are you all right?
Grant: Yeah, I’m all right.
McKenzie: Who was driving the ute?
Grant: I was.
McKenzie: Who owns the ute?
Grant: I do, or the business does.
Haper, meanwhile, was looking the scene over. McKenize, for unknown reasons, broke scene preservation by pulling the tarpaulin over Cindy’s body. This fully covered her body; hiding away her spread legs. When questioned, McKenzie noted Grant needed the police vehicle to remain upright.
They never formally arrested Grant at the time, and when they did finally a bit later no fingerprints or a mugshot was taken. Evidence collected off Cindy's body, a biological sample, disappeared somewhere along the line. It was never presented to the court. The crush ute was collected by a private business and was not critically examined again. The steering wheel, for instance, was never tested for fingerprints. Everything about this event was scooped up and taken away. Where? No one seems to know.
What Went Sideways at the District Court Trial - 1990
When Grant went before the all-white jury at the District Court almost three years later he was found not guilty on all charges, all hinging on his well-presented defence - that 16-year old Mona was the driver. The family's protests that she had never learnt to drive manual fell on deaf ears. The girl was stripped of her hair, skin, and dignity. But that was not all.
A critical charge against Grant was dropped just before the trial. Indecently interfering with Cindy’s corpse was withdrawn days before. The corner could not determine if the molestation of the 15-year old happed while she was dying, or after she died. From what I have read, that Cindy was abused in this way was never under question. Rather, hair-splitting occurred over when the molestation occurred - before or after death.
To this day, Grant’s barrister, Tony Quinlivan, still argues “justice was done’’. Yet, even he admits that court transcripts show “Grant told barefaced lies’’. This high powdered, Sydney-based defence team was expensive; costs that could not be possibly covered by Grant. Instead, they were paid by an anonymous benefactor.
In 2018 the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions apologised for not informing the families that the charge of interference with a corpse was withdrawn and admitted letting the graving families finding out in court was a mistake, but defended the legal decision: "I have not been able to identify any error in the ultimate decision that was made or this office's consideration of the relevant legal issues."
Additional Criminal History
Grant’s previous criminal history that I was able to recover starts from his arrival in Moore, NSW:
OCT 1980 – driving under the influence, 3mons disqualified driving & fined $250AUD
NOV 1980 – exceeding prescribed content alcohol & driving while disqualified (BAC 0.20), +6 mons disqualified driving & fined $500AUS & good behaviour 3yrs & $1,000AUD
FEB 1981 – speeding, dismissed due to lack of evidence
MAY 1981 – driving while disqualified, fined $800AUD & disqualified from driving until 22 NOV 1984
12 FEB 1990 – assault occasioning actual bodily harm
Inquest
In the past 30 years, little attention had been paid to this case. The two girls lay for hours on that red dirt, hurt and in pain. They suffered for sure. But most coverage says that they had suffered and died alone. They did not, they could not. Grant was there the entire time.
13 Sep 2019 During the Questions and Answers session of the NSW Parlament
NEW INQUEST INTO DEATHS OF CINDY SMITH AND MONA SMITH—
Mr Paul Lynch asked the Attorney General, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence— Will you authorise or apply for a new inquest into the death of Cindy Smith and Mona Smith?
Answer— I have recently written to the Commissioner of the NSW Police Force regarding the deaths of Jacinta and Mona Lisa Smith. I am continuing to consider the matter.
At this time, the police and NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller state that two independent examinations found that police work the early morning of 6 December 1987 was "adequate". A request for an inquest is pending.
Since the lockdowns, bushfires, and political awkwardness of the past few months has come to the fore, the requests for a proper inquest into the deaths of Cindy and Mona Smith have fallen from headlines once again.

2020.10.01 12:28 corey153 Need help finalizing a cheap build for a friend

Hi, I need help finalizing a build for a friend. I live in Australia and will definitely be basing and purchasing all parts from pccasegear.com
The aim of the build is to run any modern-day title and near future titles at 1080p 60fps, no lower than medium settings(for those extra intensive games), with the budget being <$1000(just the tower). I'm aiming to making it as cheap as possible with consideration to future upgrades trying to avoid part redundancy. completely disregard appearance. Also, I will be overclocking the gpu.
I've made 3 different Wishlist's with the only difference between them being cpu and motherboard. I am pretty confident on every other part though still open to suggestion.

1.https://www.pccasegear.com/wish_lists/1121910/cheapoIntel1151 [i3 9100f] - cheapest cpu I could find though 4 cores is becoming dated, capped ram speeds and socket 1151 seem to be fading out with 10th gen, might require mobo upgrading in the future. it seems to perform well enough in this benchmark https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6DYo11xSIA
2.https://www.pccasegear.com/wish_lists/1129155/cheapoAMDgen2 [ryzen 5 2600] - slightly slower clock speed though can overclock and has 6 cores 12 threads, outdated socket
3.https://www.pccasegear.com/wish_lists/1129497/cheapoAMDgen3 [ryzen 5 3100] - only 4 cores but 8 threads, can overclock, newer board socket, supports 3200mhz ram speed.

my thoughts are that the ryzen 2600 is probably the most future proof option but if it will inevitably need a motherboard upgrade in the future it might be better to go the cheaper 9100f or better avoid redundancy with the 3100, thoughts? if you have a completely different suggestion, I'm happy to hear that too.

2020.09.30 18:07 mccanntech Wi-Fi 101: Origins and History

Wi-Fi as we know it today is a series of standards, voted on by a worldwide engineering body, the IEEE. The IEEE is an open membership organization with more than 423,000 engineers in 160 countries. It took years of work and dozens of proposals to form the original Wi-Fi standard in 1997. It took even more effort over the last 23 years to get to where we are now.
The story of the invention of Wi-Fi depends on who you ask. There is a complicated history leading up to that original 1997 standard, and the truth is hard to decipher. I'm not capable of litigating who invented what, but there are some key players to know about. Where possible, I will point out the people and the organizations behind the technology.

Wired and Wireless Precursors: Say ALOHA to Wireless Networking

In 1968, researchers at the University of Hawaii began to investigate if radio waves could be used for communication between computers. The project was led by professor Norman Abramson, Dr. Franklin Kuo, and a team of faculty and students. It would go on to become known as ALOHAnet.
During this time, wired computer networking was in its infancy, and evolving rapidly. Packet switching was conceived of by Paul Baran in 1964, and first demonstrated by Donald Davies in August 1968. In October 1969, the first ARPANET link was established between UCLA and the Stanford. By June 1971, ALOHAnet was the world's first wireless packet switched data network.(1)
During the development of ALOHAnet, Abramson and his team had to solve many foundational issues with wireless networking, including collisions and failed transmissions. They decided that a random access protocol would be the best way to accomplish this. The ALOHA protocol allowed terminals to send data whenever they had it, and listen to their transmissions to make sure they were received, and acknowledged. If a transmission failed, terminals would resend after a random delay. This was simple and effective, but had problems scaling up to more users. The ALOHA protocol was improved and expanded, and was the inspiration for CSMA/CA.
ALOHAnet was a pioneering technological marvel, but it was experimental and not fit for commercial use. Most critically, unlicensed spectrum for computer communications was not available to the public yet. Since the University of Hawaii didn't have a way to sell the technology, it was put into the public domain. ALOHAnet was decommissioned in 1976, but it inspired others to continue what it started. Most notably, Robert "Bob" Metcalfe studied it for his PhD dissertation.
Through the 1970s, many wired local area network technologies were developed. Some were proprietary, and some were open standards. Most of this early work has gone on to become ANSI or IEEE standards, and formed the basis of the computer communication and the Internet. A standards-based approach wasn't destiny, and we all benefit from the pioneers who pushed for standards over proprietary solutions. All of this groundbreaking work on wired standards helped lay the foundation for wireless.

Key Dates In Wired Networking History

The Wright Brothers of Wi-Fi

By 1985, all the pieces were in place for the development of a universal wireless networking standard. These were the Wild West days of wireless networking. Dozens of companies were competing to be the first to produce a successful product. Many companies came and went, so I'm only going to focus on the biggest and most important ones.

NCR and WaveLAN

In the 1980s, NCR Corporation was a big international company selling computers, ATMs, and cash registers. They wanted to develop a way to have their cash registers work wirelessly. This would give them a competitive advantage, and allow retail stores to avoid the costs and logistics of running cabling to every register. At the same time, cash registers were becoming more computer-like, so NCR sought to develop an International wireless standard that any computer could use. Two of the key engineers assigned to this project were Cees Links and Vic Hayes. Through 1986 and 1987, Vic and the other engineers at NCR developed a product which became known as WaveLAN.
NCR introduced WaveLAN to the world in 1990.(2) While WaveLAN was intended for use in cash registers, it was also positioned as a wireless alternative to Ethernet and Token Ring for PCs. In the 1990s, wireless products were expensive, and hard to use. The early drivers were buggy, and documentation was hard to find. WaveLAN network adapters cost hundreds of dollars, and access points could cost thousands. The high cost and limited usability kept WaveLAN as a niche product, mainly found in the big businesses that could afford them.
WaveLAN operated at 900MHz or 2.4 GHz, and offered speeds of 1 to 2 Mbps. It competed with Aironet's ARLAN and others which offered similar speeds, frequency ranges and hardware. Several companies also marketed wireless bridges and routers based on WaveLAN technology. Wireless networking products became a mess of competing companies and different implementations. The need for an International standard was clear.
NCR wanted to have Vic Hayes make the technical proposals to the IEEE on the companies behalf. Vic disagreed, and fought to stay independent and not do any of the proposals on behalf of NCR. The company agreed, and this actually worked to their benefit. Since Vic wasn't pushing NCR's proprietary solution, he gained the trust of others. Vic ended up becoming the first chairman of the IEEE 802.11 working group, giving him the nickname “Father of Wi-Fi"

IEEE and the 802.11 working group

In 1988, Vic Hayes approached the IEEE to contribute to the 802.4L, an existing committee creating a wireless standard based on Token Ring. As it turned out, that committee had become inactive, and the chairman had quit. This let to Vic becoming the chairman of 802.4L, and the forming of a new working group, 802.11. Ethernet and WaveLAN technology formed part of the technical base of the 802.11 committee, which was officially started in 1990.
WaveLAN and the knowledge of Vic Hayes' group at NCR helped form the basis, but countless others contributed as well. Many other companies submitted proposals for various aspects of the standard, and the group compromised and voted on the best ideas along the way. Most of their documents are still publicly available. The 802.11 group continued to work throughout the 1990s to develop the standard, which was a long and complicated process. It took 7 years and input from countless engineers to form the first Wi-Fi standard, known as 802.11-1997.
The first Wi-Fi standard was in some ways a messy compromise. It allowed for transmissions over Infrared or 2.4 GHz radio waves. It also allowed for two different frequency selection methods, which prevented guaranteed compatibility. In the end, both Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) and Direct-Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) were added to the standard. The group allowed these options as a way to please the entities involved in the creation, but it made the standard weak.
802.11-1997 never gained much traction. Despite that, the group got to work on its next set of standards, 802.11a and 802.11b, which were developed in parallel. The main difference between them was the frequencies and the modulation schemes they used.
802.11b hit the market first. Despite the slower speeds, people preferred the availability, lower cost, and longer range of the 2.4 GHz equipment. The success of 802.11b snowballed into the development of 802.11g, and made 2.4 GHz the defacto International wireless spectrum range for years to come.
In the late 1990s, Wi-Fi's success wasn't guaranteed. Early Wi-Fi devices were expensive, slow, and often incompatible with other devices. According to Vic Hayes, he approached many computers makers to persuade them to add Wi-Fi to their computers, but most of them said no. Steve Jobs and Apple wanted to add Wi-Fi to an upcoming laptop, but they wanted it to cost $100, not $500. They argued that the lower cost would make it more marketable to consumers.
Apple eventually got the $100 Wi-Fi card they wanted. The iBook and AirPort launched on July 21, 1999, a few months before the 802.11a and 802.11b standard were finalized. It was the first mainstream computer designed and sold with integrated wireless networking.

OFDM, CSIRO, and Dr. John O'Sullivan

This is where our story get murky. CSIRO is the Australian federal agency with a long history of scientific research. They have developed many advanced technologies, such as atomic absorption spectroscopy. According to CSIRO, Wi-Fi is an Australian invention. The truth isn't that simple, and it isn't that clear.
CSIRO's key insight came out of their work in radioastronomy. In 1977, CSIRO researcher Dr. John O'sullivan was searching for small exploding black holes. He wrote a paper about how fast Fourier transformations could be used to sharpen images from optical telescopes. As the waves traveled towards the telescope they became scrambled, and CSIRO developed a custom processor to use fast Fourier transformations to unscramble the image. While this technique didn't help him discover the black holes he was looking for, it helped to solve a different problem.
Starting in 1990, John O'Sullivan led a team of CSIRO scientists to develop a high-speed wireless network. Their goal was 100 Mbps, to compete with the best wired networks of the time. This caused them to look past the techniques used by ALOHAnet and WaveLAN, because they wouldn't be fast enough. One technical challenge they faced was how radio waves tend to bounce off surfaces indoors, causing an echo that distorts the signal. Using fast Fourier transformations, they found a way to transmit a signal while reducing that echo. Rather than using one fast wireless channel, they used lots of slower channels. This is known as multicarrier modulation.
Single-carrier modulation systems exploit only one signal frequency to transmit data. Multi-carrier modulation systems divide the whole frequency channel into subcarriers, and the data stream is divided into many low-rate streams transmitted in parallel. Single-carrier modulation has advantages, but multi-carrier modulation is better suited for high-bandwidth, short-range communication like Wi-Fi. In modern Wi-Fi standards, we use multi-carrier modulation in the form of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, or OFDM.
According to their lawyer in a 2009 patent dispute, CSIRO did not invent Wi-Fi, but it did invent the best way of doing it. CSIRO scientists tested hundreds of techniques until it found a unique combination that worked at high speeds. That combination involved multi-carrier modulation, forward error-correcting, and frequency interleaving to send multiple copies of the data. This specific combination of techniques is the secret sauce the CSIRO applied for a patent for in 1992, and was granted in 1996.
CSIRO didn't invent the underlying techniques, since they were already known. Frequency division multiplexing dates back to the late 1870s, when telegraph companies were trying to increase their capacity. Multi-carrier modulation was described in the 1950s. OFDM is attributed to Bell Labs employee Robert W. Chang back in 1966. Interleaving also dates back to the 1960s. Forward error correction was used when NASA sent the Mariner mission to Mars in 1968.
CSIRO also wasn't the first to combine these techniques and apply them to computer communication. Harris Semiconductor sold modems to the US military using these techniques in the 1980s. Critically, the Harris modem was never patented since interleaving, modulation, and coding had been around for decades by the time Harris came along. According to testimony, Intel official Stephen Saltzman said that outside CSIRO, engineers didn't take the idea of a Wi-Fi patent using these techniques seriously. Experts at Intel had already shipped products based on OFDM with previous employers, and thought that a new patent with OFDM didn't seem credible. Regardless of the merits and the origin of the ideas, US patent #5,487,069 was granted in 1996.
During the development of the 802.11a standard, CSIRO made the IEEE aware of its patent and offered to license it. Beyond that offer, CSIRO never got involved in the creation of the 802.11 standards. Dozens of companies made proposals to the various 802.11 committees, offering to submit their ideas or license their patents. CSIRO never submitted a proposal for the original 1997 standard, or any of the revisions. Despite their lack of involvement in the process and lack of licensing agreement, 802.11a, 802.11g, and later IEEE standards would go on to use OFDM and multi-carrier modulation.
Years later, CSIRO used this as the basis for lawsuits against major networking and technology companies. CSIRO won settlements worth $205 million in 2009, and another $229 million in 2012. If you want more detail on the CSIRO patent fight, Joe Mullin wrote a good piece for ArsTechnica back in 2012. Mark Summerfield wrote a counter-point to Joe's article for Patentology, looking at what the CSIRO patent did and didn't cover.
The truth is a messy thing. In Wi-Fi's case, success truly did have many fathers.

802.11 Timeline

Footnotes:

1 - ALOHAnet used 100 KHz channels, operating at 9600 baud on the 407 and 413 MHz UHF frequencies. It originally connected seven computers across four islands, which communicated wirelessly with a central computer in a star network topology.
2 - AT&T would go on to buy NCR in 1991, only to spin off the remnants of the division as NCR and Lucent by 1996.

2020.09.29 06:17 bmartinek 2020 Trek SL5 vs Canyon Endurace 8.0 CF SL Di2

I'm in a pickle I was about to go out for a ride was lubing the chain and my bike fell onto a stool, putting a crack in the top tube :-( It will take 4-6 weeks to repair, also I could use another bike. This really difficult because I'm in Hong Kong currently and there are almost no bikes my size here. Or are $$$, or will take 8 weeks to get
I narrowed it down to two choices: a 2020 Trek Domane SL5 54 (Used) or a new Canyon Endurace CF SL 8.0 WMN
Here is the criteria:
Trek Domane SL5 ~$2500 Pro: -Chameleon Paint -Supposed to be super comfy (fits up to 38s, ISO speed) -Here now -Looks Sharp (semi integrated cockpit, in frame storage)
Cons: -105 goupset - Weighs 9.8kg - YIKES! - has a couple scratches on the paint -Only 3 year warranty to the frame for second owner
Canyon Endurace ~$3800 shipped Pro: -If I order the Woman's which has the cool Aquamarine color it can be here in 1-2 weeks, otherwise in 6-8 weeks -8kg before lighter parts -Sharp lines -Responsive, yet comfortable -Electronic Shifting
Cons: -Dated looking design, something about external cables for me... -Only fits up to 28mm tires -Potentialy harder to get serviced -Not particularly Aero
Living here in HK for the next 4-5 months so weight is important as it's all climbing. But will probably move to Tasmania Australia at some point in the future so more flat riding. I'm a new dad so perhaps not as worried about 160km days as much now. Thanks for the help!

Statements by Minister Shandro:
  • Testing is crucial for Covid-19 control
  • Over 1,000,000 Albertans have been tested - a remarkable accomplishment
  • At start, a few hundred tests could be tested
  • Wants to acknowledge AHS and Alberta Precision Labs
  • Thanks Albertans who have gotten tested
  • Government will act to reduce wait times and speed up test results, expand testing, and prepare for winter
  • Wants Alberta to remain a leader
Q&A
  • Plans for more hiring of more hospital staff?: AHS, in January, built up workforce
  • Federal tracing app?: Spoke to Minister Hajdu. Still a couple issues, but happy to continue working with Minister
  • Expanding testing in counties?: Defers to Mauro Chies, who spoke about enhancing testing locations. Some rapid testing in regional centres, though lower throughput
  • What evidence supports the EMS dispatch changes? Will you provide the proof?: EMS, including dispatch is integrated into AHS over a decade ago. AHS made decision to integrate the last 4 municipalities into AHS for 2 reasons: (1) AHS is borderless, and (2) integrate oversight. Met with mayors of the municipalities last week and agreed to look over information he was provided before AHS proceeded. Will be against changes if the evidence shows response times would be adversely affected, but not what AHS evidence is showing him
Statements by Mauro Chies, Board Chair of APL
  • Thanks all front line workers
  • The accomplishment has been made through overtime and flexibility that
  • There is still lots to do going forward
Q&A
  • Drive through testing in winter?: Looking at alternate facilities. Tents worked well in summer (though a bit hot), but need more protection from the elements in the cold
Statements by Dr Hinshaw:
Working from Home
  • Dr Hinshaw has provided the update from home after developing a sore throat on Friday and was tested (negative Covid result). Despite this, doesn't want to pass one whatever it is and will work from home until symptoms resolve
  • Acknowledges that the job can be done remotely and staying home isn't easy, with many facing financial choices
  • Encourages people to stay home and to not expose others when sick
Schools
  • 20 schools with alerts (1 cases) have had no transmission, with class back
  • Active alerts/outbreaks (1+ cases) in 113 schools (~5%) with 210 active cases
  • 47 schools have outbreaks (2+), 6 on "watch" (5+)
  • 9 schools with likely in-school transmission
Foothills Medical Centre
  • Rise in hospitalizations due in part somewhat due to Foothills outbreak
  • 1 death this weekend
  • Outbreak is a significant concern and great deal of work is ongoing
  • 2 additional units have outbreak protocol - one is a transition unit (case linked to outbreak has been identified), one is a short stay (unclear source and outbreak protocol is precaution)
  • 53 cases, 26 patients, 4 deaths
  • Likely that more cases will be identified
  • Critical step is to minimize new spread
  • Visitation limited to end of life or preapproved essential visitors
  • 39 surgeries have been postponed planned for today. Surgeries are being rescheduled, most booked for the next 7 days
Millwoods Shepherd's Care
  • 19 cases linked to outbreak with 2 deaths this weekend
  • AHS working closely with operator. They are on site and meeting virtually
  • Testing offered to all residents and staff
Herd Immunity
  • Many questions about the topic
  • % required to develop herd immunity depends on infection type
  • Estimates for Covid-19 are 50-70% (Canada's serology suggests 1% of population with infection)
  • The suggestion of letting spread occur among younger individuals does not take into account drawbacks
  • The rapid spread means it will likely still spread into vulnerable populations despite best efforts
  • An approach on herd immunity would hurt the elderly and those with chronic conditions
  • Death from Covid-19 is also not the only severe outcome: to date, 1/67 between 20-39 with Covid-19 needed hospital care, 1/18 for 50-69, and 1/4 for 70+
  • These numbers can be a strain for the health system. "We have seen this overload happen in other countries. We do not want it to happen here"
  • We don't know if long lasting immunity is possible, potentially making all lives lost meaningless
  • Reliance on development of safe and effective treatments and vaccines is important
  • The balance of all our health needs until then is important
Other
  • The lower number of positives on Friday was due to "previously clinically reported cases"
Q&A
  • Expectations for flu season?: Depends on Albertans. Some places like Australia had high flu immunization. That plus Covid restrictions limited influenza spread. That is one potential future for Alberta if we go down the same path
  • Level of concern at Foothills?: As with all acute care outbreaks, this is concerning. The regular testing and aggressive tracing is important and there is a capable outbreak team (partly leading to the large numbers we're seeing). Suggests that Misericordia outbreak has greater unknown spread while Foothills has well understood spread
  • Lower mortality despite rising cases since July. Is this due to treatment?: It has been observed in a few places. Age specific breakdown may not reflect...possibly just deaths are related to who is being infected. While treatments are improving, we may see increased death because of outbreaks like the ones we're seeing
  • Halloween?: Working on a guidance document. Looking for a fun, safe Halloween
  • Thoughts on NHL "experiment"?: Shows the importance of planning early, cooperation with public health officials, and constant communication. Highlights usefulness of the private testing for NHL as to not affect the public's health
Additional information will be logged below:
  • Calgary Upper NE's active cases: 119 (+13)
  • The 4th death over the weekend was in Sherwood Park

2020.09.28 18:24 TheCapedBaldy951 Please help

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.

I'm mainly trying to use the pc for entry level gaming nothing to fancy just wanna run modern games at good speed

What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?

My maximum amount of money I can spend is 500$(AUD)

When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.

I plan on checking out the parts that you guys send me first then clarifying with my parents buy it then build it

What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)

I already have a pc it self I just need a few upgrade etc. Graphics card, Ram e.g.

Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?

I live in Australia and i plan to buy from anywhere really that ships or is close to my location (Gosnell's, WA)

If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.

As I said before I am not needing of a new pc I am just needing of a few upgrade because the pc i am using right now can barley get 20 fps on roblox

Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?

I am not sure what that means

Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)

I would like my pc to have a lot of space and run most modern games smoothly please (sorry if I come of as rude)

Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colours,

As before mention I already have a pc I just need a few upgrade to help it run better please

window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular colour theme preference for the components?

I dont mind

Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
No

(sorry if I made any grammatical errors or spelling mistakes English isn't my first language)

Overview
Modded Minecraft Club is a community driven network of multiple modded Minecraft servers. These servers are run by our excellent staff, some of whom have run Minecraft servers since Beta 1.6. Our goal with MMCC is to establish a mid-sized, healthy, community around Modded Minecraft. To accomplish this goal, all griefing is forbidden, griefed or bugged items will be refunded, there is no tolerance for disrespect among community members, and there are written and enforced moderator guidelines to protect against power-tripping staff.
Whitelist
In general, a whitelist is ineffective at preventing bad guys from joining the server, creates unnecessary administrative work, and creates a barrier to legitimate players. Since launch, we have assumed everyone is a legitimate community member from the beginning while also keeping strong anti-grief controls in place. This has been very successful, with very few occurrences of grief because, almost all because the player did not claim their build. If you want to join, come right in!
Rules & Moderator Guidelines
To ensure that we can easily change rules and let players know about the changes, we do not keep the server rules in our advertising posts. Instead, you can view this page on our website that serves as the one true source for the server’s rules. In addition to server rules like most servers have, we also have written and enforced moderator guidelines that are in place to prevent both ineffective moderation and power tripping moderators. If you feel that a moderator has violated these guidelines, you can contact the owners ([email protected], [email protected]) for a swift resolution.
Minimal Server Lag
The servers are located in a professional datacenter in Falkenstein, Germany. They run on a dedicated server with an i9-9900k CPU, 64 GBs of RAM, and a 1000 mbps guaranteed internet speed (both up and down). For full server specifications, see the Hetnzer EX62-NVMe. Many servers make outlandish claims about their complete lack of lag, and many don't have any lag at that moment. What they lack is a future commitment to quickly and effectively solve any and all lag problems that may arise. This is what you get with Modded Minecraft Club -- no lag now and in the future.
Extra Notes
We aim for 24/7/365 uptime, although, there are occasional automatic restarts ensure stability and to make modifications along with crashes that come with modded Minecraft. If you have any other questions, feel free to join our Discord server!

2020.09.27 21:57 Halls_of_Durin Aboriginal Archives: The Life, Death, and Neglect of Justice for Lynette "Norma" Daley

This is the first in a collection of true crime events, by themselves uniquely brutal and investigations themselves unquestionable, yet quietly set aside by the local public servants - be the police, justice workers, and others.
Note: This story contains the names and descriptions of deceased Aboriginal persons.
Lynette Daley
Ms. Lynette "Norma" Daley was born 16.7.1977. Much of her early life has not been reported. She was raised by her mother Thelma and step-father Gordon, a happy, adventures tom-boy who enjoyed tussling with her brothers, climbing trees, and going on adventures. She had dreams of competing in the Olympics. Yet, by 15 she struggled with school, at 16 dropped out, and fell in with a rough crowd. By 16 she had become pregnant and by the time of her death, at 33, consented for her parents to raise her seven children. Yet, despite struggling with alcohol addiction, she attempted to be engaged in her children's lives. However, between 1998 and 2010 Daley dealt with abusive partners and domestic violence. Up to her last week of life, she made efforts to visit her children and her parents - that final time staying for three days. The day before she died she told her sister about a planned holiday with two acquaintances, who the family considered to be at most social friends.
Her name and details were not public until the inquest into the failure to prosecute her death. Much early reporting refers to her simply as "Norma".
Her Death
Date/Time
Australia Day
26 January 2011 / the early hours of the morning
Ten Mile Beach
The location of the sexual assault and death occurred in Ten Mile Beach. This area is near the Coral Sea, relatively secluded beachhead paralleling A1 well south of Gold Coast, New South Wales. Both the water and the sky are bright blue. There the sand is a moderate strip disappearing under a line of large boulders then thick-standing trees. Now and then are warning signs: DANGER inset on a red circle. No lifesaving service, ringed by unstable cliffs and hemmed by strong currents; this is where Daley died.
The Accused
Adrian Attwater was stated by some reporting to be Daley's boyfriend. He is now 45. His friend, Paul Maris, now 49, may have known Daley as well. On Australia Day 2011 the three left on a camping cum fishing trip, according to both the accused and Daley's family. Attwater, in particular, was known to Daley's family but they were not familiar with him.
The Physical Evidence and the Events
What was discovered on that beach was both blood sodden and burnt. By the time police arrived an hour had elapsed from the 000 call. Daley was cold to the touch, her lips blue, possibly her extremities blanched with bloodloss. Her blood was everywhere, not just covering her legs and congealed in a large clot between her feet but across the sand, the vehicle, a mostly-burned mattress, and the jeans of one of the accused.
A forensic pathologist found vaginal injuries more severe than found in precipitous (traumatic) childbirth.
The sexual acts, said by both men to be consensual, involved Attwater placing his right hand into Daley's vagina. When questioned by police Attwater demonstrated at act by clenching his right hand into a fist. When asked if the act was referred to as "fisting" he replied "Just about, yeah" but denied he did it roughly. Maris also stated the sexual activity occurred by describing it: Attwater "fisted her". During re-interviews Attwater modified that act to using four fingers only to the depth of the base of his thumb in as "fishtail movement". Maris, however, re-enacted a clenched fist in vigorous horizontal movements.
Both men stated that after they reached Black Rock Camping Area, in the dark, late-night or very early morning, Attwater and Daley had sexual activity. After a while, Attwater invited Maris into the back of the vehicle to engage in this sexual activity. Daley was on her hands and knees with her head towards the front of the vehicle. Her track plants were misplaced at this point. Attwater was digitally penetrating Daley. Upon Attwater's instructions, Daley attempted to fellate Maris, but according to Maris he was not aroused or interested. Attwater became aware at this time of blood on his hand, which made it clear it was coming from Daley.
The sexual activity immediately stopped.
Between sustaining the fatal injury and her death Daley attempted to clean herself, rest on an ice-chest, and went for a short drive in the front passenger seat. The men claim she made no statements of pain or discomfort.
Immediately after noticing the blood, Daley went to clean herself in the ocean. On her way out the vehicle she rested for a moment - she sat on top of an ice-chest. Whatever quantity of blood she left was wiped away by Attwater at Maris' request. Maris said Daley had "put blood all over the Esky [ice-chest]."
It seems apparent she would have been bleeding profusely.
Police photographs showed blood had pooled between the back of the chest and the wall of the vehicle; despite efforts, large smears of blood were still evident. They travelled further up the beach. After they parked a second time Daley crawled into the back seat. She had lain there on the mattress, naked, cold, and intoxicated, and continued to bleed out.
Between the time the vehicle was parked and the men returned from attempting to force a new beach access track Attwater and Maris did not communicate with Daley. When they return to the vehicle the accounts differ slightly; Attwater claimed Daley made it to the front seat under her own power. Maris was more uncertain, saying: "I’m not sure whether Adrian put her in the front or if she got in by herself…" As dawn was breaking the vehicle pulled away from the Black Rock Camping Area.
At this time the men discuss the smell. Maris suggested the mattress be disposed of, describing the smell as "... like she might have crapped in the back of the car or something." This, he claimed, is why they stopped after only 1km of the trek and went on to burn the bedding, Daley's bloody bra, and other items. Maris said he burnt the bra because he didn't think Daley would want it anymore. He never asked her. To remove the mattress Maris had to remove the fishing rod holders, open the bonnet, and use the disconnected fuel line to fill a coke bottle with petrol. Everything was replaced and the diesel poured over the mattress and other items; it was then set alight. The track pants were not there. While Maris was doing this, he says Attwater and Daley went for a swim and "to go and clean themselves."
Attwater claimed he did not know Maris intended to burn the materials. When asked about how much blood was on the mattress, Attwater indicated a blood pool about 10cm in diameter; Maris said there was "blood everywhere". Attwater said that around that time Daley appeared to suffer some sort of seizure. He and Maris pulled her from the water. Attwater stated she wasn't breathing and had no pulse, so rolled her into a recovery position. Attwater being CPR while Maris dialled 000. Maris also went to get help from another - a man named Miller, camping nearby.
Miller states they drove back to find a man, wearing jeans, performing CPR on a woman who appeared to have been dragged from the water. Attwater claimed to be naked. Miller went on to say Daley had sand on her face and in her hair. There appeared to be blood coming from her vagina and matted in her public hair. At Maris' request, Miller began CPR. He found her to be cold and hold no pulse. He formed the opinion she was dead but continued to perform compressions as instructed by EMS. Miller noticed a large blood clot directly below her feet. It later had been measured by police to 150mm in diameter.
Before 0700 Maris went to flag down another vehicle. While he did so, Miller voiced his suspicions to ambulance corp.
EMS arrived at 0657. Officers arrived. Police Sergeant McDonald asked Attwater about the identity of the deceased. Attwater produced Daley's Commonwealth Bank keycard from his wallet. Blood smears were found in numerous areas within the vehicle. Those and burnt samples were collected.
The Autopsy
An autopsy found Daley died from blunt force trauma to her genital tract and had suffered horrific internal and external injuries after a violent sex act. Moderate to severe force tore and/or overstretched the vaginal lining which led to blood loss and shock; a circulatory crisis with low blood pressure and inadequate tissue and organ perfusion lead to organ failure and death. Daley's BAC was reported as between 0.303% (femora) and 0.352% (vitreous humour) - which are fatal ranges. There were no features of drowning.
“Blunt force genital tract trauma” was concluded as the primary cause of death – blood loss and hypovolaemic shock was the mechanism of death. Severe alcohol intoxication exacerbated the impact of blood loss. The kidneys and brain were pale supporting blood loss and low blood pressure.
Numerated injuries were as follows:
The time between the injuries upon Daley's person and her death are difficult to determine. The decline could have been from an hour to as many as four hours. Minutes before death she would have been noticeably paler and sweating, as well as unable to walk without aid. The injury while examined by an obstetrician and gynaecologist expert (gyno) advised that the tearing itself was unusual in “normal” consensual penile-vaginal intercourse only having been recorded in two instances, both with life-threatening blood loss and needed emergency surgery. The gyno suggested Daley sustained a torn artery producing raid and sustained blood loss.
The coroner's conclusions, with Daley named as Norma :
...I am inclined to accept as accurate Mr Maris’ demonstration of a vigorous punching motion as the most likely explanation for the injuries having been sustained.
Mr Attwater does not claim that Norma gave verbal consent to his actions. In the circumstances, in my view, Norma would not have had the capacity to meaningfully consent to the sexual acts that caused the injury that led to her death and Mr Attwater was not entitled to interpret her lack of resisting as consent....
I also conclude that it is more likely than not that Norma would have felt pain as a result of the injuries and have communicated this immediately.
Even if one accepts that there was no immediate complaint and that the men believed the blood seen was only menstrual blood, which I don’t, it is inconceivable that Norma would not have known that she was injured and bleeding unnaturally. It is also unbelievable that she would not have communicated this to the person responsible for causing it.
I conclude that both men are dishonestly denying any such complaint was made because they fear it reflects adversely on them.
...She was dearly loved by her family and she returned that affection. I know she is sadly missed by her children, her siblings, her parents and her extended family. I offer them all my sincere condolences.
The court expresses its contempt and disgust for the callous disregard for her welfare shown by her supposed friends Messrs Attwater and Maris.
...
The fatal injuries were accidentally inflicted during sexual activity undertaken at a time when it is likely Norma was too intoxicated to be able to meaningfully consent to such activity. The person responsible for the injury failed to respond to it by seeking medical attention for Norma even though she was because of her circumstances and condition incapable of obtaining that for herself.
In my own view the anus laceration, while not one to bleed profusely, would have caused considerable discomfort. Walking or sitting would have been difficult. Even at the outset of four hours by the time Miller arrived to render aid Daley could have been dead for an elapsed period.
Media Coverage
The Daily Examiner headlined the assault as a "‘Wild sex’ led to woman’s death" in 2014. The News.com.au May 10, 2016 report was headlined, “Campaign for justice over death of Lynette Daley, left to bleed after ‘wild sex.'” Much of the early coverage was tabloid based. With the terminology used the News.com.au article was found to breach the Standards of Practice of the Press Council, stating that "...the Council considers that the heading and the first paragraph misleadingly and unfairly suggested Ms Daley had consented to sexual acts immediately before her death." Even non-Australian media, like the Guardian in 2016, headlined: "Death that shocked a town: case reopens on woman who died after sex with two men on remote beach".
The Investigation
The NSW Director of Public Prosecutions Lloyd Babb withdrew both charges for Attwater and Maris in 2012 before they reached a committal hearing. After an inquest in 2014 State Coroner Michael Barnes referred the men to the DDP again, stating that a case was likely but Babb refused to prosecute them.
"It disturbed me that following the coroner's recommendation and with the material that was contained in the coroner's brief the decision was made by the DPP not to prosecute on any charges," said Robert Tumeth, Aboriginal Legal Service lawyer who represented Daley's family at the 2014 inquest.

2020.09.27 01:52 IrishCyborg Building a computer for Blender3D and other graphics programs

Hi!
What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
I plan on using this PC mainly for Blender and the Adobe Suite, with the priority on Blender. I'd like to focus on Blender's 3d modelling, texturing, shading, and animation. My current computer (2012 macbook air) lags significantly, and I'd like to get the necessary components in this new PC in order to have little to no lag where possible.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
My maximum budget is flexible, but 3,000 AUD is where I'd like to start.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
I'd like to build this computer as soon as possible, because I'd like to start learning more Blender sooner. :)
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
I've heard a good low-core, high speed CPU is necessary for Blender, and a good GPU is necessary for rendering. I also need a big screen with accurate colors.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
I am located in Australia.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
I am not reusing any parts.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
I don't plan on overclocking to begin with, but possibly down the line in a year or two.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
I have heard a 3 storage device system is good for blender, e.g. 1 SSD for project files, 1 SSD for the OS, and 1 HDD for archival files.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
I'd like one that glows rainbow, I'm shallow like that. 😂
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
I don't need Windows included.

2020.09.25 20:35 Rsubs33 [Game Preview] Week 3 - Cincinnati Bengals (0-2) at Philadelphia Eagles(0-2)

Cincinnati Bengals (0-2) at Philadelphia Eagles (0-2)
The Eagles are off to their worst start with a real coach since 2003 (I consider 2013-2015 non-existent) when they also dropped their first two games of the season. The team would like a repeat of that season where following a week 3 bye,the team rebounded to defeat the Bills 23-13. The Eagles ripped off 12 wins in their remaining 14 games following their 0-2 start. Maybe the Eagles will be able to do the same, but they will have to shake the injury bug first. The Eagles will be without first round pick Jalen Raegor this week who underwent surgery on his hand to repair a torn UC ligament in his thumb. The Eagles may also be without Fletcher Cox who is dealing with an oblique injury. The Cox injury should be watched closely if he can’t go, Joe Mixon and Joe Burrow will have a much easier day against the struggling defense. Last week against the Rams, the defense was under prepared and unable to stop anyone. The Rams took advantage of Jim Schwartz’s consistently odd decision to have his CBs, play so far off the line of scrimmage, giving a free release to the WRs and allowing easy short passes. If Schwartz does the same this week, it will be another long day for the Eagles defense and a great fantasy day for Tyler Boyd, who Bengals Joe Burrow connected with 7 times last week including 1 for a TD. On the other side of the ball Doug and Carson will both need to be better than the last two weeks. For Carson, he needs to get out of his own head and play with confidence. For Doug, he needs to find some creativity and help his 5th year QB. He would do well to get Carson moving and utilize the RBs more in the flat and screen game. However, if we see more of the same we saw in weeks 1 and 2 from the Eagles coaching staff, we should expect another loss. Hopefully that is not the case and Carson and the coaches can learn from their mistakes in weeks 1-2 and pull our a win this week. Go Birds!

Recap from Last Week’s Games.
Eagles - The Eagles' struggles continued in their home opener against the Los Angeles Rams. An early fumble by Miles Sanders led to a Rams touchdown by Tyler Higbee. After the Eagles cut their deficit to four with a Jake Elliott field goal, Los Angeles responded with a Robert Woods touchdown run followed by a second Higbee touchdown catch. Trailing 21-3, the Eagles closed the deficit to five points by halftime with touchdown runs by Wentz and Sanders. After forcing a three-and-out on the Rams' first possession of the second half, the Eagles would drive to the Los Angeles 21, only for Wentz's first down pass to be picked off by Darious Williams, turning the momentum back in the Rams' favor as they would outscore the Eagles 16-3 the rest of the way. Despite not being sacked once during the game, Wentz finished the day with a 56.5 passer rating, completing 26 of 43 passes for 242 yards and two interceptions. The 37-19 blowout loss dropped Philadelphia to 0-2 for the first time since the 2015 season, and marked the Eagles' first home opener loss since that same season. It was also the first home loss to the Rams franchise since the opener of the 2001 season.
Bengals - After losing their regular season-opening game at home, the Bengals then traveled to Cleveland to face the Browns for Battle of Ohio Round 1. In the first quarter, the Bengals scored first when Randy Bullock kicked a 38-yard field goal to make it 3-0. Though, the Browns took the lead when Nick Chubb ran for an 11-yard TD to make it 7-3. In the second quarter, the Browns went up by double digits when Baker Mayfield found O'dell Beckham Jr. on a 43-yard TD pass to make it 14-3. The Bengals then came within 4 after Joe Burrow found C.J. Uzomah on a 23-yard TD pass to make it 14-10. Mayfield then found Kareem Hunt on a 6-yard TD pass to put the Browns up by double digits, 21-10. The Bengals closed out the half when Randy Bullock kicked a 43-yard field goal to make it 21-13 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Browns went back up by double digits when Chubb ran for a 1-yard TD to make it 28-13. The Bengals drew closer with Bullock's 27-yard field goal to make it 28-16. In the fourth quarter, the Bengals were able to get within 5 when Burrow found Mike Thomas on a 4-yard TD pass to make the score 28-23. Though, the Browns would go back up by double digits yet again when Hunt punched the ball in for a 1-yard TD to make it 35-23. The Bengals wrapped up the scoring when Burrow found Tyler Boyd on a 9-yard TD pass to make the final score 35-30.

Stats to Know
QB Adjusted Completion %
What’s one thing rookie Joe Burrow and 5th-year Carson Wentz have in common? They have not been terribly accurate so far. PFF has an Adjusted Completion % stat that accounts for clear drops, spikes, throw aways, batted passes, and throws made while getting hit. Burrow and Wentz are near the bottom in AC%, with 70.4 and 70.3, respectively. Interesting to note a bit of the distribution within the array of aforementioned stats: while Burrow has had one of the lower rates of on-target passes dropped by the receiver (4.1%), Wentz doubled that at 8.4%, good for 5th-highest. Yes, Wentz has stunk, but...
Matchups to Watch
Rookie versus Veteran, Which QB Has Poise Down 0-2?
With two consecutive weeks of porous defense from both the Eagles and Bengals defensive units, this Sunday's matchup should rest squarely on the shoulders of each offensive unit. Will the Eagles be able to rely on fifth year starter Wentz? Will he be able to shake off two tumultuous weeks and put together a consistent offensive performance? Will the Bengals weapons coalesce around their rookie Burrow? Will he be able to put together his first complete NFL game and demonstrate that this season is the turning point for the franchise? A big piece of Wentz stabilizing his game time performance will be continuing his focus on short-time-to-throw plays. From Week 1 with 8 sacks versus the Washington Football Team to Week 2 and zero sacks versus the Rams with the vaunted Aaron Donald, the Eagles Offensive Line and Wentz’ pocket choices resulted in less lost yards and broken plays. Unfortunately, key turnovers again forced short-yardage scoring situations and massive tempo swings. Wentz needs to take advantage of the cleaner pocket that will likely be available versus the Bengals (2 sacks on the year so far) and finish drives cleanly to put the game away. Without rookie WR Jalen Reagor (placed on IR with a thumb injury after Week 2), Wentz will have to make use of the remainder of his threats, including veteran DeSean Jackson who had 6 catches on 9 targets for 64 yards against the superior Rams’ defensive backfield. Joe Burrow has had the classic introductory NFL QB experience. A high-flying game versus the Browns last week, with 300+ yards passing, 3TDs and zero ints was fantastic bounce back from Week 1 versus the Chargers. 193 yards, 0 TDs, and an int will not win the game for the Bengals versus the Eagles, even if Wentz struggles. A key focus for Burrow will be settling into the routine and relationships he’s formed with his offensive weapons. AJ Green remains one of the best WR threats in the NFL and his slow start to the season (8 catches for 80 yards) could end at any time, in any game with a QB like Burrow. Burrow threw a nearly record setting number of passes during the almost-come-from-behind loss versus the Browns; if the Bengals are able to establish their run-game and abuse the Philadelphia secondary in a similar way to the Rams offensive scheme, then Burrow could have a very big day. If he is forced to drop back 60+ times, and Joe Mixon is again held under 75 yards on the ground, the Bengals and Burrow may have a hard time. Keep an eye on how comfortable each QB is feeling, and whether they can establish good tempo. That will be key to offensive production this weekend.
Coaching Conundrum; Pederson versus Taylor
At the core of the NFL these days is the combat between offensive and defensive schemes. Both coaches come from a background of coaching QB play and offensive schemes, though from different eras and coaching trees. How they go about using that experience to enable their teams to a secure a necessary win this week will make or break their seasons. Doug Pederson, at the helm of a revamped offensive coaching tree with the addition of Quarterbacks Coach Press Taylor as Passing Game Coordinator, has had a rough three year stretch of offensive stumbles. Since the miraculous Super Bowl 52 season (2017), the Eagles have consistently failed to be productive, with a lot of the challenges relating to lack of roster depth and poor player improvement through misaligned coaching. This is the third consecutive year of stuttering offense to begin the season and a big piece of the matchup versus the Bengals will be how well the Eagles can settle in. Coach Pederson has made it clear that the lack of full-speed off-season practice plays a big role in the Eagle’s struggles so far; so it remains to be seen when and if both units can make use of this gametime practice to solidify the small flashes of prior success we’ve seen. Opposite Pederson is Coach Taylor, in his second year of a complete rebuild, now with the (ideally career-long) franchise WB in Burrow. Hailing from the Shanahan line, through the LA Rams McVay, Taylor was brought into Cincinnati to recreate the organization’s coaching structure and form a new core for the team around veteran WR AJ Green. The 2019 season showed marked improvement throughout, particularly in run production and passer protection; the addition of Covid-related practice limitations have also taken their toll on the Bengals’ preparations for this season, as exemplified by the Week 1 drubbing by the Ravens. Taylor returns this season with second-year offensive coordinator Brian Callahan, formerly the QB coach for the Raiders. The cerebral talent in the Bengals organization is clearly arrayed around giving Burrow the best possible chance to shine; and they may just do so against an extremely poorly performing Eagles defense. Being able to establish consistent offensive strength and consistency throughout this season will be a key part of whether this new coaching structure is able to flourish in Cincinnati or if yet more change is needed to remake the franchise. During game day, keep an eye out on how these coaches make use of their star players, now that the very early season yips and stumbles should be behind them. Whoever can appropriately adjust to the flow of the game and take advantage of the others mistakes will win this football game.
The Big Punt: How Special Teams Makes An Impact
Kevin versus Cameron, Huber versus Johnston, two players that may very well decide the nature of this Bengals versus Eagles matchup. These titans of the turf, two punters to rule them all, and two punters to pin them deep; two punters waiting on call, and two punters to make fans weep. In lieu of offensive production, and in hopes of good defensive play, Kevin Huber and Cameron Johnston bring their punting prowess to Lincoln Financial Field this Sunday. Hailing from opposite sides of the Earth, Huber from Cincinnati itself, and Johnston from Geelong Australia, these two are some of the most capable foot-based deliverers of the football to opposing teams. Huber holds nearly all of the Bengals franchise records in punting statistics; and Johnston holds the highest gross and net punting averages in a single Eagles season. The third year Australian punter is known by Eagles fans for his insanely long hang-time and penchant for pinning the NY Giants inside the 20 (20+ times in four games). Huber is loved by the Bengals fanbase as both their longest tenured player and his consistency over the past 13 years. He has missed just 2 of 180 possible games, and has been perennially top 10 at his position. Both players are in the final year of their contracts, so effective performance is a must for maximum salary gains. Keep an eye out on how effective these two are in establishing and keeping good field position. If both teams are struggling for consistency, these swings may be the key to a late drive that puts the game away. Additionally, with every punt comes the magic of a muffed punt return. If you’re a particular connoisseur of special teams play, watch and see if these punters add any special spin or location to their strikes; and key turnover last week in this position kept the Eagles hopeful. Maybe lightning will strike twice for the Eagles Special Teams and the Wizard with the Large Leg, Cam Johnston; maybe the Bengals gunners will scoop up a muff and Huber will be huger than expected. Stay tuned!

2020.09.24 05:39 nickhintonn333 Missing Flight 370

Missing Flight 370
On March 13, 2018, a twitter user who went by the name strayedaway, or Ty, posted a thread about a creepy voicemail he received regarding the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. The thread went viral and many more people came out claiming to have received the same one.. This prompted people all over the internet to get involved and help solve the mystery. However, there was never a real conclusion, and after receiving an overwhelming amount of publicity and even death threats, Ty and many others linked to the thread deactivated their accounts. Many people claim the whole thing was an elaborate hoax or even an alternate reality game, but I am not satisfied with those answers. Ty’s thread and the bizarre disappearance of MH370 still linger in the back of my mind to this day.
https://www.news.com.au/technology/online/creepy-military-voicemail-warning-of-impending-doomsday-sends-internet-into-meltdown/news-story/afe34f8dce8d48a0269cd925838743e8
For those who are unaware, MH370 was an international flight that disappeared on March 8, 2014 while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. The voicemail Ty received 4 years later was an SOS message thought to be recorded on the missing plane’s black box. Some said solar flares happening around that time may have allowed the message to be picked up by cellphones. Solar flares cause electromagnetic pulses in the atmosphere, so with increased electromagnetic activity, signals would have been amplified and had a farther range.
https://www.sciencealert.com/no-massive-solar-storm-headed-to-earth-march-2018-noaa-g1
The voicemail was a recording of a robotic voice speaking in military code. After twitter investigators deciphered it, they discovered a chilling warning about aliens followed by a string of numbers that turned out to be coordinates close to the place MH370 vanished from radar. Besides the voicemail, there are many more oddities surrounding this event and there seems to be a synchronistic pattern hiding in plane sight. Flight 370, a Boeing 777, left on the 7th day of the 3rd month and Malaysia Airlines is said to fly nearly 37,000 passengers daily.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-26492748#:~:text=Malaysia%27s%20national%20carrier%20is%20one,Jennifer%20Pak%20in%20Kuala%20Lumpur.
The television show Lost seemed to predict the event as well, 10 years before it happened. In the show, a Boeing 777 deviates from its path, turns around, and disappears somewhere off the coast of Australia. This is exactly what MH370 did. The show also seemed to predict who would be on the plane. In Lost, some of the passengers included an actor and two men who used fake passports. On MH370, there was an actor and two men who used fake passports as well.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/iran/10688861/Mystery-fake-passport-holders-on-flight-MH370-were-Iranian.html
https://www.thestar.com.my/lifestyle/uncategorized/2014/03/13/marco-polo-stuntman-and-jet-lis-body-double-ju-kun-was-also-on-flight-mh370/
The actor was Ju Kun, Jet Li's body double, and fake identities were used by two Iranian men seeking asylum in Europe. Oddly enough, in Lost, a psychic predicts the plane crash. MH370‘s disappearance also seemed to be predicted by the Nigerian prophet T. B. Joshua. In 2013, T. B. Joshua warned that an aircraft carrying over 200 passengers from an Asian nation would have some serious problems. MH370 had 227 passengers on board. The video of his proclamation went viral on YouTube after the flight’s disappearance.
https://emmanuel.tv/content/missing-malaysia-airlines-mh370-prophecy-tb-joshua/
Another strange synchronicity is Lost was first aired on September 22, 2004. September 22 would turn out to be big day for CERN, exactly 7 years later. If you‘re unaware, CERN is a facility that smashes atoms together to create mini black holes and look for other dimensions. On September 22, 2011, CERN succeeded in sending particles faster than the speed of light. Physicists hypothesize that going faster than light speed could actually result in time travel. However, the claim was supposedly debunked sometime later. But this is still up for debate.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faster-than-light_neutrino_anomaly
But what I find most strange, is the fact that the man who made this discovery was forced to resign. Conspiracy theorists claim CERN did in fact achieve time travel and caused the past to change, a phenomenon known as the Mandela Effect. They say this historical event constantly switches back and forth between having happened on the 22nd or 23rd. Supposedly, every year around this time, new inconsistencies in history pop up.
https://www.alternatememories.com/historical-events/general/september-22-23-date-anomalies
Ironically, the plot of Lost is centered around a time travel experiment called the Dharma Initiative. In The Lost Experience, it’s revealed that the goal of the experiment was for people to alter the timeline and push back doomsday. Oddly enough, its logo looks just like CERN.
CERN compared to the Dharma Initiative's logo
Coincidentally, The Lost Experience was an alternate reality game. Remember that the voicemail received by Ty was thought to be part of an ARG as well. Similarly, the investigation sparked by Ty’s thread uncovered the date of a supposed doomsday event, April 18, 2018. Many speculated that on this day there would be an alien invasion. Obviously this didn’t happen, but perhaps uncovering the plan pushed back doomsday, like in the Lost game. With UFOs now in the news, the idea of an alien invasion or apocalyptic event seems even more relevant. If you’ve read my other threads, you know I think the apocalypse has something do with something known as the Black Sun. Oddly enough, MH370 also has connections to this concept. The Black Sun is a symbol that some say represents a portal to somewhere beyond space and time. This strange mural dedicated to the disappearance of MH370 depicts the plane flying straight into something resembling a black hole. The portal seems to be luring the passengers inside by telling them to come in.
\"Come in!!\"
Another mural seems to depict this as well. In this picture, we see a plane flying right into what appears to be a tear in the fabric of reality. Yet another mural shows the missing flight returning through one. Were the passengers of MH370 taken to another dimension?
Some questionable murals
This all seems reminiscent of Donnie Darko, a movie about doomsday, time travel, and a plane falling through a black hole in the sky. Just like in Lost, the main character, who is guided by a demonic humanoid rabbit, is tasked with closing a time loop and stopping the apocalypse. The Black Sun is also symbolic of Saturn, which was known to the ancients as the god of time. Saturn is also famous for having a hexagon on its North Pole. In the painting below, we see MH370 trapped behind a net of hexagons. Were the passengers victims of a Saturnian ritual?
A literal hex on MH370?
Even stranger, in Man of Steel, a trident shaped UFO that resembles the Malaysian Airlines logo crashes off the coast of Australia, just like MH370 did. The movie shows the coordinates of the UFO being 37° S 76° E. Here we see more numerology at work. But it gets weirder. If you type in the opposite coordinates, 37° N 76° W, you get the location of King Neptune‘s Park on Virginia Beach. At the park there is a statue of King Neptune holding a trident. The streets leading up to the park, which are adjacent to 33rd Street, form a trident as well.
Just a coincidence?
Okay, these 'coincidences' are getting a little out of hand.
Ironically, Virginia Beach is an hour drive from Middlesex, the town where Donnie Darko takes place. In Mission Impossible III, another movie centered around chasing a white rabbit, there’s a scene where the Malaysian Airlines logo can be seen from behind, revealing a hidden 666.
Do you see?!
The same exact scene was also used in the movie Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The movie is about sun harvesting robots who reside on one of Saturn’s moons. I find it odd they reused the same footage for two films released roughly 3 years apart.
Hmmm...
The area MH370 went missing was also near one of the 12 Vile Vortices. The Vile Vortices are anomalous regions where the planet’s electromagnetic field is thought to be stronger than usual. The regions are known for UFO activity and strange disappearances of boats and planes. The Devil’s Triangle, better known as The Bermuda Triangle, is one of the most famous Vile Vortices. Oddly enough, on the exact opposite side of the globe, is the region MH370 disappeared. Are these two places somehow connected?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_T._Sanderson
The Bermuda Triangle (right) and the area MH370 went missing (left)
All these connections could be nothing more than a coincidence, but I find them too profound to dismiss. I believe the matrix speaks to us in symbols and I believe it is trying to tell us what really happened to MH370. There is still a lot more to this story and it involves the rabbit symbolism I mentioned briefly. I’ve written about the white rabbit and it’s connection to time travel before, but maybe I will do a part 2 where I go into it in more detail another time. Anyways, as always, thanks for reading.

2020.09.24 03:05 AutoModerator General Questions Thread, September 24, 2020
